I personally think that the "handsfree" devices make it worse. Only because the driver now has their phone in hand causing them to look down to see what is going on while not paying attention to the road.

Haha... same here! Remember when we pulled that guy over because we thought he was holding a cellphone to his ear, but he was trying to stop his Bluetooth from falling OUT of his ear?? Its things like that that kind of make that law null and void...

Well, I've been guitly of it once or twice but, if you "need" to call someone put the damn thing on speaker and set it in the cup holder or something keep both hands on the damn wheel and eyes on the road. Policemen can't pull someone over for using one here, yet but I wish they would.

Handsfree devices are supposed to make it "safer" but the real danger is from the actual talking. For most people it's difficult to maintain concentration on driving when the attention is diverted to listening and talking. I wish they were banned completely. I turn my phone off when I get behind the wheel and if I forget, I don't answer it. I can always call them back after I'm stopped.

In CA it's unlawful to use a non-handsfree while driving. The fine is $20. Big whoop. Whadda waste except it can provide PC for a traffic stop.

Any ticket we write for that is mandatory court. So it carries a little weight around here... luckily. Its just too easy to pull over for a quick second!

I'm guilty of using my phone while driving. I really have been trying to break the habit because it is very dangerous. I think it should be against the law everywhere to not be able to use cellular devices while driving.

Even the threat of getting a fine of around  240$ (1000NIS) doesn't stop driver from using the cell phone while driving. Lets say the most expensive handfree set costs you around 180$, but I guess they think they will be of the hook.

Allways bare im mind that also waiting for the red light to change doesn't mean you aren't driving and holding the phone in your hand reduces your concentration drasticly!

Using a cell is forbitten since 2004 in Germany. But who cares? The chance that you are pulled over is about 0. In Berlin the PD is too busy to stop drivers for that. I wrote about 40 tickets last year, and I think that was nothing. Fines must be higher, more officer must be there to enforce it.

Some people use earphones and I think that make it more worse. But how about navigation gear onboard? How is that in the US? Every second car here have a mobile navigation and drivers use them while driving, typing new addresses or routes. That should be banned too, while driving. I wonder how those people find their way before these navigation devices flooded the market....

In NC, the gov. was going to pass a law that only emergency personal can talk on a cell phone while driving. Haven't heard any more about it. I do know that almost 95% of  near misses where someone almost hit hit, cell phones have been involved. I want to stop them and stick the cell phone where the sun doesn't shine. In NC, you have 16 yr. drivers with cell phone. That spells "Disaster".

I have a simple philosophy: If I stop you for a traffic violation, and you were/are talking on your cell phone, you get a ticket!  No if, ands or buts! I have seen too many near crashes from people driving along, only concentrating on their conversation.

I don't know the law in Texas, but I saw this once I was on vacation there:

We had to stop at a red light at in intersection to a mall. From there came 7 SUVs (yes, 7 in a row), and each (!) driver had a cell phone on their ear. Oh, something I also noticed: All drivers were female... I don't say they use cells more then male while driving, but it was strange that 7 SUVs with 7 female drivers all had a cell phone in use...

I think most people don't care, or think they can handle any situation. I used to take pictures of them while having the cell phone in use (don't worry we are two officers in a car...), and even we are driving next to them, they don't notice... Until the ticket comes... LOL

My "take" on the issue is simple:  Take the %$#&*!$&* phone out of your ear and drive the car!!!!!!!!

I also like the people who decide to read books while driving. (you see alot of stupid stuff when you're up high in a pick-up.

This one STILL baffles the hell out of me.  I had seen a driver once, with a cell phone, a hamburger, and a cigarette all at the same time.

i'm sorry but cellphones in any configuration should be banned. the driver's (if you want to call them that) are more interested in their conversation. that causes a lapse in reaction time etc. (i know i'm preaching to the choir). my union is pushing for the law to ban them in louiaiana.

I do not understand how so many people are so important.  Every car I pass from a BMW to a '72 Datson have important drivers on the phone.  San Antonio didn't pass the "no-cell phone" ordnance for the city, just school zones.  I am all for it.  I am pretty busy guy with two phones, one work one personal, and I can wait that 10 minutes until I get to my destination.

My favorite is texting.  I could never be a local LEO,  I would have writers cramp.  You ALL do a great job, not only in your duties, but your restraint while dealing with morans.  How many people have to die or injured before our "law makers" put their phones down and do their jobs, SERVING THE COMMUNITY?

I don't know how it is in other states, but drivers here can do just about anything else other than use a cell phone. It's quite rediculous, that talking on a phone is illegal, but eating a big mac, putting on makeup, using a GPS, reading a map, etc. is all perfectly legal while driving (until they crash). Yes, phones are dangerous, and distract the driver, but let's be real here.......I bet most of you have seen all the things I have mentioned , which many are just as- if not more- dangerous than using a phone.

One person was killed in a traffic wreck Tuesday morning on the Northwest Side, police said.

The fatal incident happened about 5 a.m. in the 100 block of Dawnridge Street near Jackson-Keller Road.

Few details were immediately available about the one-vehicle accident, but police were still on the scene about 6:45 a.m.

A female driver was "arguing" on her cell phone and not paying attention to an oncoming TREE.  Her passenger was injured, but should make a full recovery.

I normally use a headset when I talk on my phone while driving.. That is less than 4 percent of the time..

I know here in Utah the Legislature just passed a bill that makes it illegal to send text messages. Here is a link to that bill....  http://le.utah.gov/~2009/bills/hbillint/hb0095s02.htm

Amen!  Inattention is the problem, not just a cellphone.  It's strange that people get so mad at cellphone users, but don't hear that much about makeup, big mac, cd-changing, children yelling, passenger distraction, sleepy, etc drivers....

I agree! This has become an epidemic everywhere, especially with the younger driver's........ They need to be OUTLAWED!

Well, it's RACE WEEKEND here in NE Tennesse and SW Virginia I saw 3 freaking cars all pulled over in a line..a LINE and all three drivers where talkin on the phone while the police officers where checking their info and whatnot...I know they might have been speeding or whatnot but like...what the hell? 3 of them..In a row!! Not a mile or two down the road from each other I'm talking about all of them were within 50 yards.  Driving while talking on a cell is not a traffic violation here YET like I said in my first post but I mean honestly while you're being pulled over? GET OFF THE DAMN PHONE!!

Far too many people driving while yapping on a cell phone forget that they are operating a one ton unguided missile, from driving 35mph in the fast lane, not moving when the light turns green, not stopping when the light turns red, meandering across multiple lanes, to backing up on the highway because they were so busy talking that they missed their exit!.  These idiots should be cited every chance we get before they have the chance to once again ask the big question of the day.......CAN YOU HEAR ME NOW?

I have never really been on to talk on the phone while driving. I think it is very dangerous. The only time I answer is if I know it is an emergency. Otherwise I would pull over somewhere to make a phone call. I think its ridiculous how many people I see on the phone even though the law has been passed. I think the fine was hire, maybe more people would take it seriously. I cant count how many times I have been behind someone, green light, yet they are stopped because they have no idea the light has turned green because they are either texting, or too interested in their conversation. It really irriates me! Many people have drifted in my lane, because they were looking down at their phone to text. GET OFF YOUR PHONES! NOTHING is that important to where you have to risk everyone elses lifes so you can have a conversation...Obey the laws, its really not asking that much.

I agree that people shouldn't talk on the phone while driving.

Although for me, when able to use my handsfree headset I am able to drive and talk at the same time without having to look down at my phone. I don't even need my phone to answer a phone call, I just have my phone sitting in the passenger seat.

I agree with that. The handsfree is good, but some people haven't realized that they can set up the blue tooth to where they dont have to pick up there phone to answer it, they can have it automatically answer it. Alot Safer!
