I am 38 years old and currently work for the Port Authority Police/Security dept as a security agent, but from working there these last couple of years I've realized what it is that I want to do because I love working with people and helping them. I also love the commradary they have.... Not to mention the adrenaline rush is awesome when something happens. lol
But my question is....am I too old to be starting this now ?? I've recently enrolled in college to get my AS in Science of Criminal Justice, I took my exam for the police academy (in hopes my dept will sponsor me to go) and a few other little things.....but I see alot of the officers from the sherriffs dept etc who are quite young and I'm not sure if I have a chance....have I blown this by waiting too long to figure this out ?

I don't think you have. The age of maturity, so they say, is 26. You have what many other's don't: life experiences. We hired a guy once that was 52. He stayed about 4 years and then moved on to a state job. Age is but a number. If you can still move as fast as the younger guys, go for it. If you can't, out think them and cut'em off at the pass!

Well... Personally I would say no, however if you want to go into the FBI then yes they have a cut off. But from other post I would say no you’re never too old as long as you can pass the physical part then you should do fine. Also talk to your local PD's or research their WebPages.... GL

I knew many guys that came into our agency at that age after they retired from the military so go for it. Just make sure that you are in good health and condition.

I'm in great health and physical condition....I know I could pass the academy without a problem, but I see so many young kids (in their 20's, so they are young to me)....lol.....as police officers and it worries me about getting hired. I just don't want to think I'm pursing this degree and then get it done and find out they think I'm too old for this. You all are so wonderful in here.....I'm sure I'll have many other questions....although some have already been answered through some of the other threads.....
Thank you so much ! :)

JWilson,

If it makes you feel better I’m 27 and as it stands the only female that will be in my group... So don’t let them intimidate you or get under skin. Just use your knowledge and experience to conquer them... GL

Age is a problem when the agency has an upper age limit cut off. Otherwise they are more concerned with your body working the way it is supposed to.

JWilson, I've got a few guys in my academy class who're 38/39-ish. One of the guys (38yrs) I was talking to as we were being fitted for uniforms. He told me that his run time, for his second physical assessment, was 10min53sec. My time on my second run was 11min42sec. I'm 21...he's 38...he blew me out of the water. So, just as the others stated...age is but a number, so long as you can fully perform the job duties. In my opinion, the guy that I just mentioned is a stud, and set a good example (and a high bar to reach) for us younger guys in the academy...definitely someone that I'll be training with on the weekends throughout the academy.
