I was wondering how someone or any of you have become a k-9 unit? i have been wanting to be apart of a k-9 unit for a long time and that is one of the reasons i am pursuing a career as an officer. i was just wondering what you had to go through and what are the benefits of being apart of a k-9 unit is a police department.

thanks,

Nathan

I got started back when dogs were first domesticated, well at least it seems that way. It certainly takes a love for animals, and a willingness to be the redheaded bastard  step-child of most police departments. You'll find most departments require you to be an officer for 3 to 5 years before you can apply for any specialized training, including K9. It's like having a two year old as a constant companion. However, if you do become K9, you'll find you have the most loyal partner and, in my opinion, the most rewarding job available in law enforcement.

As an added note they really like it if you make your first post in the introduction section. Just a thought.

I actually have been a deputy for 11 years. 2 of those I have been a handler. It is the hardest unit to get into; this is because people either die, get kicked out or retire from this spot. Unfortunately, one of my friends was murdered and I was honored to fill he and his canine partner's vacancy they left behind. I would definitely read up on case law involving canines if you are seriously interested and start helping your unit train. That is the biggest thing for our candidates is to come help. Like DFrost said, our dogs are the most loyal partners and this is the closest thing to a brotherhood I have found in all my years as a law enforcement officer. It is simply the best and most rewarding job.

I've always heard you can judge a man's character by the way he treats his dog and his wife. not ..necessarli in tht order! Dog are the most loving intelligent of human species God ever created. I believe tht every dod is as good as his master or who teaches him. I enjoy watching a program Tv. Called DOG TOWN. IS ON NAT'L GEO CHANNEL AND IS AN AMAZING SHOW. THESE PEOPLE REHABILATE DOGS AND just got in the Michael Vick  dogs that were abused and used in dog fighting. Many of them had to be put down, but a few were saved by this group and are being rehabilitated now. 2 of them have been doing just fine and are on the way to being adopted. You have to know or let the dog know who is boss and in a loviing way. Dog's sense who likes them and who doesnt'. A lot of psychsology is involved. But to love a do is to know true happiness and especially know that do loves you back unconditionally. I thank God put them hear on earth to teach us pitiful humans how to live. Too bad they are misunderstood and even mistreated for not being so human as humans think they ought to be.  Remember dog spelled backwards spells GOD!
