wow I forgot to check this for one day and look what happened!! I respect security guards who are professional in what they do. But then there are some who just need a job and don't do it right. They are always sloppy looking and don't know a think. On the other hand, the professional ones are the ones I would trust if I had a problem. There are good guards and bad guards, just as there are good cops and bad cops. That's all folks.

I have laughed my hiney off! This thread was great! Odin, you really need to check out stand-up if you ever leave LE. I love to see people get all worked up and you have managed to this all by yourself. Good job!

Every one has their own opinion, no matter what i say on here and no matter how much we bash eachother I still think its funny and i dont take all of it to heart. Hey this ought to get you goin, I took your advise and started a ASK A SECURITY GUARD thread in ask a cop. Thought it would be funny, DID IT ALL BECAUSE OF YOU !! LOL

Hey everyone...as we all can see there are obviously 2 different kinds of security personnel. I have been one as I mentioned in my previous life prior to LE. I was a very proactive So, not your typical parking lot watcher that cant qualify to carry a firearm. I, like a lot of LEO's do appreciate the service SO's provide. There are a few that are a cut obove the rest and I would look at as an equal. This is not saying I think all SO's are of the same deserving respect, however those that present themselves in a professional manner and don't act like they know everything are one's I dont mind sharing time with. The other SO's that give the profession such a bad rap are the one's I will and do avoid at all cost!! Habib that doesnt speak english and carry's his .380 in his turbin is the one I am afraid of. The others that do provide a service to LEO's are welcome in my book. So for all you hard working security officers that arent stupid asses with a guard card and a death wish, thanks for everything you do, I personally appreciate it! And for those that are doing the job as a joke or you cant find any other means to support your sorry ass, GO AWAY AND LEAVE ME ALONE!!!!

I started off a LP for a major store. We kept a good relationship with the police. All the problems that were generated came from mostly from the LP side (IE. boss or wannabee cop). The LP job did help me some ways in being a LEO, like verbal communication (We did not carry guns, non-lethal, or body armor) and report writing. The longest foot chase I have had so far was over 1 mile & it was as a LP (No K-9, chopper, radio or peremitter/back up. Just a cell phone to call the police). I can tell you one thing, that it is not being a cop though. As a LP I never had to respond to a fatal crash, then tell some kids parents the their kid was dead. Never as a LP did I loose a friend or people I know to some ass hole. Never as an LP did I have to take some kids away from their parents or home or take "daddy" or "mommy" to jail. I have respect for for LP/Secuirty and there are good people in those professions. The jobs might be simular, but there not he same.

To Icablue, to respond to your post above, Twice I have discovered young deceased people with their parents present. Both times the parents asked me to do a welfare on their kids, not children but 18 and 20. i found them in their apartments oe was a suicide, the other a drug od. now on that part, i did not tell the parents, I just asked them to come with me, Then i called The police and they told them. So on that part, no one have a heart attack on what i am about to say but, there is a big difference when it comes to security and police about that, they are not at all alike on that. On the part of taking kids from their parents or out of their homes, you bet your ass i do that, if a see a child that is in danger or that does not have a safe living enviorment, i personnaly pick them up and take them with me and call child welfare, if i see abuse on children, i take the children and hook mommy or daddy up and call the police and child welfare. Now do i actually do the long line of paper work no, but there is paper work that i fill out and not just the security report either. But yes i am the one that phisically walks in Their house and takes the kids in the first place. Now as far as losing a a friend or coworker in the line of duty, yes i have. Kenneth Anderson, A friend, not working at the same company as me, but still a brother security officer and one i knew personally, was killed May 24th 2004 at a mid first bank branch here in Tulsa. He was standing by a desk when a father and son walked into the bank. the father walked up to the teller and pulled a 40 caliber hand gun and demanded money from her and all the customers, Kenneth pulled his weapon and ordered the dad to drop the gun, the dad started to pull the gun around towards Kenneth so kenneth shot the man several times with his 45. as Kenneth was shooting the father, The son pulled a sawed off shot gun and shot kenneth. Kenneth was able to return fire striking the son in the ass. At some point the dad was able to shoot Kenneth one more time, Killing him. Both of these bastards were shot by kenneth, the dad multiple times and they both lived. Kenneth Died. And the last company i was working for i was involve in a 7 person domestic, I called for backup, and my backer was Jim Mason a friend who i had known for a while and my supervisor. When the people in the domestic tried to turn on me I asked jim to step it up. as he was reponding to my call he was driving 75+ miles an hour during a storm. Out of no where a large tree fell across the road way in front of him. there was no way he could stop, He hit the tree and was killed instantly. I calmed the domestic down and as soon as every one left from the domestic, i started calling out officer welfare checks(10-90 where im from), No response. I followed the course he should have taken from where i was to where he was responding from. I found the wreckage and what was left of him. He had made it within two miles of me when he was killed. So yes i know what it feels like to lose a coworker. Anyway you guys are right there are alot of things that are not even close to being the same.

JD, I am sorry for your losses.

Does your company give you guys any sort of support, debriefing, whatever, when you have gone through that sort of thing?

I hope they do-- cop or security guard, either way, those sorts of experiences are emotionally and spiritually costly.
