Does anyone know if attaining an A.A. Degree on top of possessing a Basic P.O.S.T. ceritifcate, will make one a better candidate for hire versus not having any of those two? I've heard some agencies will hire without either.

Hi
I am not sure what each agency has as a preference, my humble opinion, the better the education the better the chances.

Adam,

Talk to your local PD officers they seem to be able to give you the best information on this... One thing I suggestion though make sure that the classes you are taking will benefit you. As I have said in the past I am CSI certified; but because Utah doesn’t have a high crime rate I really cant use it. If I was in Vegas then I could, however I have taken all my credits and applied them to my bachelor’s degree so it’s still benefiting me... Just make sure you get into what you want and make sure it’s what your state requires... i.e. for me they want some math, computer, and criminology type stuff in my degree. This just gives you a better chance. I can also tell you this the more officers you know in your area the better chance you will have.... (Do some ride alongs with the department you would like to work for, get to know those officers.)

Hey Adam, I know that a lot of the departments down here in southern california (LAPD, LASO, CHP, RSO, RPD, etc) like the thought of someone having at least an AA degree. They all told me that, since I'm only 21, it was that degree that would ultimately help me to get hired. One of the officers along the hiring process told me that it shows that someone is interested in bettering himself/herself, plus if someone has sought out education post-high school it makes the hiring staff think the academy studying will be a little bit easier for them. Not that they're smarter or anything, but if they've sought out some form of a higher education before (and graduated with it), then they'll apply the same thinking to the academy.

Plus, I know at LAPD, LASO, CHP, RSO, and RPD you get higher pay for an A.A./A.S. (2.5% bonus) and even higher for a B.A./B.S. (5% bonus).

And all of those agencies that I mentioned will hire without a degree as well, Adam...sorry, forgot to answer that part.
