Have you ever driven around town and come across something like this:

  or this:

or even this: ??

The US Flag Code covers when it is required to replace the US Flag, and how to properly dispose of it.

"(k) The Flag, when it is such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem for display, should be destroyed in a

        dignified way, prefereably by burning"
(burning in a ceremonious and dignified way)

               http://uscode.house.gov/download/pls/04C1.txt

This is more of an informative topic, rather than a Forum, but please feel free to comment.
Also feel free to ask residents and businesses that fly these types of flags, to respectfully replace them.
Incidentally, as far as Government Offices, etc, check with your local VFW or American Legion. They may replace the Flag free of charge for you. These Organizations will also collect and dispose of all of the old flags.

THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH!!

Tim

Thank you for posting this.  Too many people dont respect the flag.

I recall a story from when my family and I were on our way to Florida(large family so we drive every where).  My oldest brother who at the time was in ROTC for the Aif Force walked into the gas station where we had stopped to get gas and some food.  On the counter was an American flag with military pins pinned into the flag all over it (apparently the clown behind the counter thought this was very patriotic)  Boy my brother let him have it.  I was about six or seven and i remember every word out of his mouth which at the time wasnt  a good thing for my virgin ears.  I now have two brothers that serve everyday fighting for our freedom and representing the most  sacred thing this country has, THE AMERICAN FLAG.

I was taught by both of them and may Dad how to treat our flag with respect.  Draped across my wall above a certified military plaque is a flag that was personally flown by my borthers crew over a C-130 durring a combat mission in Afghanistan.

Once again, this post was much needed.  Thank you and I can assure you my brothers and the rest of the armed force would appreciate this too.

Yes, I've seen instances like those way to often.

Another thing that bothers me is someone carrying the flag and  meanwhile it's dragging on the ground.  Or, someone who haphazardly folds it and just shoves it somewhere for storage such as a bag.

My answer is that we place a note in the persons mail box with a simple answer, #1. Go to Walmart they sell the American Flags cheep. #2. Bring or call any American Legion Hall they'll take and properly destroy said flag.

That's it in a nut shell!

Lets not see this flag on any pole.............

Yep, I've seen it way too often.  And I've given away flags to replace some.  I've stopped at Elks, Moose, etc. lodges to mention to them that their flag needs to be replaced.

It is, per the flag code, acceptable to repair and clean flags.  And even to fold them in neat rectangles for storage, the triangle fold being used for display.

Now, if a flag has been soiled or torn honorably, in combat, then I have no problem with it showing its scars proudly.  Those are badges of honor both for the Flag and the regiment.

OH, and pet peeve - people who drape the flag around themselves as if it were a shawl.  Especially athletes.  GET IT OFF YOUR SWEATY, DIRTY BODY!

Good post, and I agree with everyone. I can't stand people who disrespect our flag. When running my parent's flag up the flagpole, no matter the weather (High winds), I would make absolutely sure that the flag never touched the ground.

My department was given a State flag by the Texas State Capitol. The flag flew over the Capitol as Hurricane Ike rolled in... So I absolutely agree with the statement about a battle-torn flag. Let it wear its scars proudly. Proof that altough America may be attacked, we will prevail, come back, and kick their ass.

I am a Sheepdog. I live to protect the flock and confront the wolf.

...But what if you have a capacity for violence, and a deep love for your fellow citizens? Then you are a sheepdog, a warrior, someone who is walking the hero’s path. Someone who can walk into the heart of darkness, into the universal human phobia, and walk out unscathed.

Displays like this show were this country is heading (a trash can). I don't know about the rest of ya'll but I am tired of all the un patriotic people in this country. If you don't respect the symbol that represents this nation enough to let it tear and go to waste then don't even bother putting it up. If something like this doesn't put a disgusting taste in your mouth then you should just "GET OUT"...........enough said.

I've been known to stop at the home or business and politely ask them to replace it. Most are cooperative. Over the summer months this year, I replaced 2 flags at elderly persons homes, at no cost to them. The VFW was kind enough to donate a 3x5 Flag to each home.

It is bad enough to see a tattered flag on a home or business but when the local Department of Motor Vehicles displays the flag without a light , in the rain , upside down or tattered just disgusts me. Someone actually took it down , cause they are not worthy of flying the colors.

as far as wearing the flag , draping it around you after you won an olympic event , i have no problem with that - it's a way of showing the world that we are #1 .

UPSIDE DOWN?? AT DMV???? It needs to come down and the State DMV Office needs to be contacted!

It's ok to fly the Flag on inclement days, if the Flag is designed for it. Unless the weather gets real bad (heavy rains, high winds, freezing rain, etc) mine flies 24/7. Currently I have 2 flags that I fly: Cotton 3x5 for special days and a 2 1/2x4 Nylon All Weather Flag. In the next few weeks, I'll get off my duff and get my 20' Flag Pole installed. For that I have a 3x5 Cotton for everyday use, a 3x5 Nylon for incoming inclement weather and a 4x6 for those Special days. And, yes. My flag is lit at night. The new Flagpole will have electric "dusk to dawn" flood lights, plus my front porch light and the street light.

Again, for the Government Buildings that have worn Flags that need to be replaced, might I suggest a call to the local VFW or American Legion? Our Chapter takes care of our local Government Offices (City/State Governments)
