I am looking for suggestions and ideas on how to raise funds for our K-9 program (or lack there of..). We need to raise funds for the dog and training class. Any suggestions that any of you have would be very helpful. We are currently talking with our prosecutors offices and local businesses, but if there are grants we can look at or ideas for good fund raisers this time of year would be very helpful also.

Thanks for the help.

Check out the Lackland AFB kennels (do a google search for Lackland Military Working Dogs).  They have dogs they have washed from the program for various reason (ranging from medical reasons such as suceptable to heat stress to epilepsy OR they cant get the dog to convert to passive response---bomb dogs and aggressive response equals BOOM!)--The dogs are free.

Go to the major dog food companies!  They love sponsor stuff like this and will donate food to the K9.

When i started in the K9 world i had to go to every business in town.  If i was you i would hit up the Wal-Marts and business like that.  What i found out is that alot of them have a certain amount of money the have to donate to different organizations..i have handled three dogs now and have to raise the money for all three...i would also hit up private clubs(Moose, VFW's etc.)..i would also put togather information to present to these organizations to show how a police k9 would benfit the community..believe me i know what u are going through and i hope things work out...

Does your department have a McGruff Dog?  Could they hold a fundraiser wearing the McGruff Dog Suit at the Walmarts and such?  Don't laugh please, I do fundraising and I know your Walmart and Corp groups as well as the VFW.  I raised appx $8,500.00 in 21 days for our local VFW here for our troops.

Jhurley,

I am in the same boat as you are. I am currently actively pursuing raising money for a K9 program (dog and training etc...) at my department. We are very small and basically have 0 budget for everything. I think some officers even qualify for welfare...sad isnt it!? Anyways, the WalMart and local lodge and VFW suggestions seem like good ones. I will have to try those. I have polled several of our residents while on shift patrolling and they are all supportive of a K9 being on the streets. You can try to post an AD in the paper for any donations. I am thinking about doing that myself. Remember that these are considered charitable contributions and are tax write offs come next tax season. Anyone have any other help or ideas I am open to all things!
