While I have never tried illegal drugs, I was part of the hiring process and interviewed many applicants who admitted to using, especially marijuana. What we were most interested in was how long since the last time. The longer, the better and under no circumstances should you lie on your application, during the interview or the polygraph. That's a guranteed no go.

Way back when you couldn't have even tried weed. Now they accept it. Other drugs are pretty much a no-no. It all depends on who you are appling with and how badly they need occifers.

Just be truthful and the longer since the illegal drug use the better.  As long as it's not an ongoing issue.  Otherwise don't do it.

I know an officer in a major city PD in Texas who was a complete drug head in high school....and was completely honest about it in his background and polygraph. The saving grace was that it was just that, in high school...he hadnt done it un years. And between high school and applying for the PD, he spent 6 years in the Army as an air assault infantry sniper.
Its all about time between last time used, what you used, and what you have done with your life since.

Look at it this way, I have NEVER done drugs in my life...never been around them. I would have a much harder time identifying narcotics than this guy would since he knows all about it.
I personally think that its a good thing to have officers and deputies who have used certain drugs back in the day.

From my experience, drug use guidelines vary from department to department. Just dont lie about anything! Some departments wont hire you.  The one that does needs to know you are a truthfull and honest person.

I heard from another Officer on another forum that his department accepts some people that were into experimental cocaine usage, but AT LEAST 5 years had to have passed.

It also depends on the state you live in and if they have  POST.  It is not only the agency rules you have to look at but also what the state POST allows.

That is easy to check.  Just search for a website such as  AZ POST.  (arizona POST)  they give the minimum requirements for Arizona.  Check the state you want to work in for their rules.  Then check the agency you want to work for and see if they have more severe guidelines.

No matter what....Always be honest.
