I was just wondering how many departments start the rookies out in the night shift. It would make sense of course but I wasn't sure if it was all rumers. How do your departments work?

Thanks

My dept does a month to month rotation from nights/days. We have no choice unless we get assigned to courts, transportation or civil. So sorry. I dunno the answer to that. I think some of the Fairfax Police Officers were all mixed up in what they got so it might be a first come first serve with your department. ?

At our department, most of the rookies actually start off on evenings. A lot of our guys bid for mid's, and we bid once a year. For your first year, you dont get to bid, and most of the openings come up on evenings. It is the power shift, and after several years on this shift, a lot of guys leave it for better hours. We are almost always held over, and if you get a drunk driver or something, you have to stay and finish the paper work, which is on overtime, so I love it.

We also bid for shifts once a year. Most guys want to work nights though. I think most of us want to work nights because of the better calls and you don't have to see the bosses around HQ. When I first came here I was stuck working days for a year. Since I gained some senority I am able to work nights now.
