Posted 9 months ago We have had many discussions on disagreeing when parents tell their children "you better behave or that officer will take you to jail. We all have heard it and we all hate to hear it (at least I do). I found a really great Poem to go with this subject, and I wish this were the respect we receive from our younger Generation. What do you think?
Mom and her son strolling down the street, "He'll protect you when things get too tough, The young officer turned with a smile, The boy passed the officer all the time before school, Then one day the boy thought and found, The boy wore a nice shirt and had his shoes tied, The boy has now grown into a man, The little boy looked at the new officer in awe, ღ Jasminღ |

Posted 9 months ago That was extremely awesome! I am going to copy it and post it at roll call for everyone else to see! I think csxspecialagent has a great idea! I think we should all take that poem and make them into cards to hand out to the parents who make those stupid comments. Thank you for sharing that with us! In GOD we trust......everyone else we run through NCIC

Posted 9 months ago When I hear some parent say that it drives me nuts. I always turn it on them and say somthing like how about I lock you up for stupidity. You want to see a person get offended. That is usally followed with I can't believe you would say that to me with my child right here. Then after the explanation if time permitts they feel even smaller.

Posted 9 months ago Yeah I know what you mean. When parents say stuff like that to kids it really does bother me because we are the exact opposite and are there to make sure they are safe. Telling your children that is bad news.........bad parenting! ღ Jasminღ

Posted 9 months ago First of all that was a great poem. I really hate that when parents tell there kids that and it does get annoying I have snapped back at some parents who have said that before I will pull them to the side away from the kid and tell them. "Don't you tell them that we have enough enemies as it is I don't want your child not to be afraid of me but know that I am there to help them if they ever need it". (Sometimes it works and sometime it don't.) Ive had several parents say I did not think about it like that and appologize for what they said. I always carry some junior deputy stickers with me and have some stuffed animals in my trunk for the kids and make an effort to speak to the kids. Its going to get tougher for us a law enforcement to reach the children especially in the day and age we are living in. But if we can educate them and gain their trust while they are young hopefully we can make a difference.

Posted 9 months ago Thanks for sharing the poem, it is great. The idea of printing onto cards to hand out to the idiot parents is also good. I keep a bag of junior deputy stars in my car to hand out at every oppourtunity I have, the kids love them.

| Posted 8 months ago Your right it bugs the hell out of me when parents tell their kids that. Do they not think about what kind of image that puts of police officers in their head? What is that kid going to do if they get lost? The for sure are not going to go running up to a police officer and try to talk to him. It's such an idiot thing to say to a kid, plus really if you can not control your kids and have to use a police officer to scare them at walmart really should they have kids. Great poem by the way "People sleep peaceably in their beds at night only because rough men stand ready to do violence on their behalf."

Posted 8 months ago Great poem, I always give the kid a hug and let them know "it'll get better when you move out". I agree im always extra nice to the young ones i dont want them fearing police officers either.

Posted 8 months ago Yeah you are both so right. I actually had a couple of friends that would tell their kids that....it really bothered me so I had to call them out. The kids demeanor was so different around me when I was in uniform vs. me being in civilian clothes. Needless to say, they sont use that parenting tactic anymore. Just a reminder, I didnt write the poem lol I found it online. I'll find the true author just so they can get proper credit!! Thanks for reading and glad you all enjoyed. ღ Jasminღ

Posted 8 months ago thats great I wish we did hear that on the streets instead of he'll take you to jail. most of the time I tell the kid no I'm not going to take you to jail but I am here to help anytime you need it. I don't but would like to tell the parents I should take you to jail for telling your kid that Trash.

Posted 8 months ago I never agreed with parents telling kids that... My grandfather and father were both cops, so we weren't ever told BS like that... Always be an Optimist; that is until NASA starts loading animals in pairs at Cape Canaveral.

Posted 7 months ago Wow that poem is great. I too am going to post it in our squad room. I always tell the child(ren) when I hear a dumb-ass parent tell them that, I wont take them to jail/away, I can only take away big people/adults.

Posted 6 months ago I got a lot of GREAT feedback from all you guys...thank you. I'm glad I'm not the only one who feels that way. Needless to say, the parent does get corrected when saying those things to thier children in my presence! The Parents will learn one day when they need the Police. Poor kids now-a-days can barely tell right from wrong due to negative role modeling by their OWN parents. Shame on them!!!! ღ Jasminღ
