Hi my name is Maria and I will be starting my criminal justice classes in the fall at my local community college. I really want to become a Law Enforcement officer but I am out of shape and afraid that I won't be able to pass any of the phsycal exams. I am also over weight. How does someone like me start to prepare for the phsycal exams. I know I have 2 years before I can even think about it but if I start preparing now then hopefully I can start out on the right foot. I also applied for a 9-1-1 Dispatcher position at my towns police station and I hope that I get that, but is that a good step in the direction while I am in school?

Maria, take a look around this site-- several others have asked similar questions and gotten some good answers.

You are wise to recognize that getting into shape is not something you can do overnight and to start on it now!

the best thing about getting into law enforcement is that they make you get in shape so you can defend your self and others, the worst thing is most departments dont make you stay that way. i was in bad shape and over weight when i started long ago. i have since found that i dont want to let anyone down on the streets because i cant do my best ,so i push myself in the gym, and run, or fatman jog as it is called here every chance i get ...make time now it gets harder with age. if i can do it anybody can.......

use caution when running after an escaped prisoner, you could hurt your knee ,be disabled have your spouse abandon your childern, wreck your own car ,be turned down for public aid, lose yor house, and have to depend on the young and naive, but you wont go hungry you will have lots of pride to swallow.. good luck.

Odin, that jab at hotcop was uncalled for, and neither was the one at those who posted in his thread. Do not underestimate the naive young; it is within them that exists the continuing strength of law enforcement agencies. As people become jaded and cynical more idealism and vigor replaces that which was lost, ensuring a balance of cold hearted distance and passion. Your second post, however, it pretty much on target.

I am in the relative same position as you Troy, so I just make sure to get some exercise every day; I watch what I eat (balanced diet, not too much per day) and I am losing body fat fairly quickly. Avoid the temptation to use diet supplements; they can cause all sorts of unintended side effects and don't help you build up muscle mass anyway. Set short term goals for yourself: x pushups, y curls, z jumping jacks, a mile in xx minutes. A good way to improve is to try to get the pieces of exercise as close together as possible. Jogging, then going right to pushups and curls really helps build endurance.

it wasnt a jab, but if the shoe fits. and short term goals are just that short. sounds like your setting limits so you dont have to give it your best. and if you really want to speed up your ability to gain muscle mass check in to some of the better supplements like whey and creatine ,it what your body uses from food. diets can slow down your ability to gain. if your as young as i believe try ,doing as many push ups as many curls and jumping jacks as you can,and run as much as possible, dont always limit yourself, there is plenty of time to gold brick later.GO HEAVY OR GO HOME, or at least thats the gym i go toos motto.

LOL

He's ba-ack! ;-D

Hi, Odin! Good to see you again!

By the way, Maria, RE extra weight, look into WeightWatchers. I lost a lot of weight with them, and they teach you healthy eating and lifestyle. It is flexible, not faddish, and you don't have to buy some special food that once you're off it, you regain your weight. Once you get to your goal weight and keep it for six weeks, you don't have to pay for meetings.

I think you misunderstood what I meant by short term goals. What I mean is: let us say you can do 10 pushups, and then get winded. A short term goal would be: in 2 weeks, do 20 pushups without getting winded. After 2 weeks you repeat the process. (I am forced to go by two weeks because of how much I have to work [I work at a fast food place, so I don't get any opportunity to do more exercise than work from place to place, bleh] Otherwise I would do 1 week goals.)

On the Diet: I am not recommending they cut back eating in general, but more saying the simple carbohydrates need to be kept to a minimum, have a decent amount of lipids every day, and go heavy on the protein and complex carbohydrates (disaccharides are alright in decent amounts, but you really want the complex ones more). Protein shakes do work well for gaining muscle mass more quickly, since your body doesn't actually produce muscle cells when you gain muscle mass; it just coats existing cells in more protein.

On supplements: I was warning them from things like Hydroxycut. If you cannot lose weight on your own, there is a problem you need to address. Using chemicals foreign to your body does not promote good exercise habits.

thats the text book answer youngster, do you drink coke. or tea,or water? all those things have some chemicals added to them, and look at the root word of hydroxycut, it isnt for burning fat.

I drink water, juices, almost no soda. I only drink tea when I need to go to sleep and am having trouble doing so. (My water doesn't have chemicals added to it. We have to have it shipped because our water is from a well and is so full of sulfur that it is beyond the saturation point.)

Hydroxycut is just the diet supplement that came to mind, there are better examples, but since I avoid the things I don't remember them off the top of my head.

On a more personal note: Please do not address me by cute diminutives/nicknames/etc. Thank you.

Troy - if you want quick results and progress (taking into consideration everyone is a little different but we all have the same human body) ponder on this...

Whatever workout you do your body will go in these phases: 1. anticipation of workout (mental/physical), 2. begining of workout (dread or exicitement), 3. heavy breathing starts (assisting cardio and muscular endurance), 4. cramps or sharp pains (from weak or dehydrated muscles), 5. "burping" (sucking in a lot of air-comes from your stomach), 6. Panic (physical/mental), 7. Vomitting (from sucking in all that air- turns the fluids in your stomach upward, 8. Sense of relief, but then sweating stops, 9. Stop sweating and body over heats, 10. Hello med unit! You have just reached the point of heat casualty and from now on you're a walking thermostat....

Depending on your motivation, seriousness and mental strength most people will get to 3 and slow down or quit. If you want quick results shoot for #5 and then tapper down slowly for your cool down and stretching.....People have text book workouts all the time and they do exactly that......stay in the text book - your body needs to feel pain and shock to change - there is no other way......If you are over weight tho, becareful of negative pain (injury) - shin splints are common with over weight people.......do lots of stretches and you can overcome those... that and IB Profin:) Goodluck...
