I am currently finishing school and applying to local police departments but was thinking of joining the reserves as a master at arms. Can anyone give me some info on what I may be doing or some of their experiences with this? I would still like to work locally and continue with school and that is why I was considering the reserves. Thanks.

Jason- consider Air National Guard for Security Forces aka Security Police or Army National Guard for Military Police? They tend to have more local locations. Depends on what you want though.

BrenAS- anyone not prior service persons without like training such as MA with Navy that has not completed similiar schools in another branch of the service usually has to attend the training. As far as I know civilian experience doesn't count really in the military. Your best bet is to talk to a Navy recruiter or someone on here with Navy MA experience. I only know some about Army or Air National Guard training. I have only been in Army Guard a shortwhile. So obivously I don't know much about the Navy. Navy is a foreign language for most of Army folks. Personally I want to change to Military Police in the Guard.

I would go Air Force Reserve/Air Guard Security Forces.  The Navy Reserve does not offer tuition assistance.  The Air Reserve/Guard offers TA in addition to the Reserve GI Bill.

I would look into the Navy reserves unless you are interested in doing some active time. Being active duty Master At Arms myself It is all up to your interests. I will tell you that The navy reserves does offer tuition assistance as well as the reserve GI bill but it is at a lower % than if you were on active but it is still a great deal. and in some cases the reserves are offering up to 20,000 as a sign on bonus (all depends on the need for that particular rate and at the moment I do not know whats being offered as an MA so I wont promise thats what you will recieve but I would highly recommend looking into it further. whether be Navy, Army, Airforce etc.... its still a great deal just do some research THEN make your decision.

I hate to bring an old post back .... but take a look at my pictures. Yes we go to combat zones, yes we do the same job as MPs, yes we get shot at and mortared/rocketed and hit IEDs, yes you will deploy as an MA to a combat zone at some point in time.

Once again, this post glaringly shows the difference between civilian law enforcement and military police/masters at arms/security forces. One is a war fighter, one isnt.

Those who want to go military, do it. Get all you can out of it. But have no illusions that you are doing the same job as a civilian police officer. I feel the Army made me the man I am today, and I got many skills from being a Soldier. But I dont feel that being an MP made me a better cop than someone who was infantry, special forces, artillery, combat engineer...etc etc etc. When youre talking 4th Generation/Asymmertic/Modern Warfare....youre talking counterinsurgency operations and all mos' are trained and experienced in conducting business on today's modern battlefield.

And yes...if you are an MP variant of any kind, your ass is deploying and its going to get shot at, bombed, mortared, IED', and people are going to want nothing more than to catch you and saw your head off on video.

3 combat tours here... So that answer would be a big FAT YES.

Jason...  I was just left the Navy after 16 years as a Master at Arms.  I loved the job but not enough to pass up a federal LE job.  I planned on staying in the reserves but I can only guess that all of the recruiters in my district are making quota as I can't get either of them to call me back.  I am strongly looking into Air National Guard.  The Army Guard doesn't have a place in my area for a criminal investigator.  Anyhow, you have 5 branches of the military (YES, I am counting the Air Force....LOL) and all of them have law enforcement.  Some a little different than others but all in all, I can't really say one is better over the other.  I can pretty much safely say that it doesn't matter if you are the Chief of Police with a major department.  You join the military, you are going to go to the military law enforcement academy.  Air force and Navy are together in Texas.  Navy also has a school in Va Beach, VA.  Army is at FT Leonard Wood, MO where I went to criminal investigator school.  Couldn't tell you about the Beloved Corps.  Good luck to you and I am certain that you will make the right decision for you.

If I have offended anyone, so be it.

The Marine Corps MPs go to the Army's training post of Fort Leonard Wood.....as is typical with the Army and Marines, they often share training sites with shared and seperate cadre of instructors such as Airborne school, both Marines and Army can go to each others sniper schools, the Marines can get slots to go to other Army run schools such as Ranger, Recon Leaders course, and various other SOF oritented training schools.

This is not something the average Marine knows, the Marines who have been MPs or have spent time in Marine SOF or SOF capable units know the cross/shared training that goes with being on that level.

State side I do patrol as base Police along with DoD Police. We operate very much like a civilian agency here. I've delt with  DUIs, traffic accidents, domestics, fights, loud noise compliants, crowd control, drugs, warrants, ect... ect... Of course it's on a much smaller scale than a big city department but over all we have about the same (and in some cases more depending on the town) action as the local PDs. Mostly this is due to our base housing actually being off base with alot of civilian traffic going through it. Though soon it will be going away as within a year or so we're turning over our jurisdiction to the local PDs and we'll be confined within the fenceline of the base.

I will say though that it is the rareity in the Navy (and I'm sure Military wide) as most patrol jobs are going to DoD.
