SInce the background check is being discussed, I thought I might add another portion of the selection process... What can you tell me about the polygraph test. Any tips or pointers???

Be honest. Pretty easy. I've taken three polygraphs and they're relatively the same and cover the same topics. Try not to stress out, and if you're lucky you'll have a cool polygrapher. The last one I had was making jokes with me while I was taking my poly, and after two rounds he said it was enough info (normally they go for three). But the biggest thing: be honest. You're hooked up to a machine, they're going to know if you're lying, so no point in even trying.

Yeah dont lie hahaha. Um I know a few ways to cheat the test, although I myself dont need to. The most important thing in a poly is your EKG or Electrocardiogram. The most secret way to cheating that, (appeared in a recent movie also) is to get a thumbtack, place it in the sole of your shoe to where it protrudes the bottom. When you are asked a question you press down on the tack with your foot, it hurts like hell, but it keeps your EKG at a level that would give DECEPTION! hahaha not sure if thats what your looking for, but yeah. Dont have a panic attack, breathe like normal, etc etc.

Meh there is not really any gaurantee of a poly. That is why the supreme court rules they cannot hold up as evidence in a court of law. People panic, get nervous, some have medical conditions that cause unusual heart rate, but they check all of that before the poly. Still its not any sure fire way to tell the truth or lie. As a theoretic investigation, I had a neighbor who had a poly, and just tested to see if I could pass while lying...passed every single one just "breathing normally". I also tried that thumbtack thing....haha i didnt last 2 minutes, that hurt like a mother_______. Its pretty simple and basic, its usually not going to come up deception if you tell the truth, they also take into consideration the types of questions they ask, and some may cause stress and nervous behavior.

Well I dont know that lol. Gah like I said a poly cant get you thrown in jail. Depeding on the departments they ask you different questions, mostly pertaining to background and history. Have you ever this, or that. Some can be simple, they may ask you "Have you ever smoked pot?". Depending on who the administrator is questions can also vary.

Your big thing with a polygraph is to be relaxed. The polygraph can only tell if you react to a question, so just stay calm.

yeah, actually they are test running the CT scans to replace those. The CT scans are much more accurate when it comes to that. All it does is scan your brain blah blah and certain chemical level in it, once they change to certain levels and colours its considered deception.

Thumbtack doesn't work chpeve. That's one of the things that I discussed with the polygrapher. There's a sensor that you sit on (butt pad) that picks up even the most remote movement. When you take the poly they tell you to sit completely still, no moving, with your feet flat on the floor. In order to step on the tack there would be a slight shift in movement, and the machine would pick up on that. If they ask you the questions three times (there are normally three rounds to the questions) and each time it showed movement (and there will be a slight bump in your heartrate unless you're trained to keep it under control) then they'll fail you because they'll feel you're hiding something. Moral of the story: don't lie, don't cheat. You want to be a POLICE OFFICER, which means that you should be above reproach. Lying to become one is embarrassing. Just tell the truth...and if that's too hard, look for a new career field. Chpeve...ever had a poly before?
