What is the law enforcement agency out there? And not just because you work there.

It all depends on what you are looking for in a career. Do you want to work the street? Do you want to work in an office? Do you want to work drug cases? I don't know if there is a BEST department it all dependds on what you want.

Chicago police dept. is the best. The city pays for your education, and the skys the limit when it comes to career advancement.

Whatever you do, don't join the NYPD!! Starting pay is $25,000 per year. Because of this, qualified people are not applying. The city is hiring bottom-of-the-barrel midgets, dwarfs, illiterates, criminals, non-English speaking foreigners, and a wide assortment of other circus freaks. Thank God I'm retired!

Im going to start a new thread..but in response to LT from NYPD...does anyone else have a hiring problem? It seems like ours arent the best lately either. We start at around 35K but...not a lot of hope.

The best agency is the one that has an administration that will back you up, and officers that are not afraid to do their job.

I have several friends at other departments around the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex, and from listening to all of their gripes (yeah, yeah, we have some too just like anywhere else!) I am glad I work for Garland PD and nowhere else. We have a great salary, great benefits, an awesome academy, and I think we are just the right size. We have an authorized strength of 327 officers, so it's not so big that you are "just a number" and you really get to know most of the officers you work with. We are a tight-nit group and the camaraderie is great. I had no experience as a police officer anywhere else prior, but went through the academy with two laterals from Dallas. They said they were amazed at how everyone took care of each other out on the street here. Don't get me wrong...it's not perfect and that's not always the case, but it's a lot better than most places from some of the stories I've heard. Our agency also keeps us equipped with everything we need...from boots/raingear/uniforms to an AR-15. And we have lots of opportunities...detective, bomb unit, K-9, neighborhood policing, SWAT, etc. But like BT45 said, it depends on what you are looking for. You can go to other cities around here and make more money than us, but you won't get to do as much "fun" police work. I have friends in neighboring departments that said they have to call a supervisor to a scene before even making an arrest (and I'm talking on minor things...not a murder investigation or something). Where's the confidence in your officers there?? We are still a very proactive department that likes to get out there and catch the bad guys...a fun place to work! If anyone wants to check us out, go to www.garlandpolicejobs.org. But I know I sound biased since I work here, so I will also suggest McKinney and Irving (Fort Worth if you are looking for a bigger department). They are good places to work too!

Chicago PD is one of the finest departments in the country and they have a great history. But I think a department is what you make of it (sometimes). The brass determines all!!!

lawdog969 says it best. Find a department that will back you up and not throw you under the bus. Talk to other officers, they will tell you what the deal is with their department. I don't know of anyone who gets into this job for the money. There is no price you can put on someone for putting their life on the line daily.

Chicago is a great city to work in. Good bosses too. Even after all the crap we get from the media, I still love my job. As for a department that backs you up, is there any that do that anymore?

I don't have internal experience at all, but to me, the U.S. Marshals always seem like one of the most professional law enforcement agencies.

You don't her anything about them until they make a capture, then it's not a whole load of ackpatting; it's low-key, just what a law-enforcement agency should be.

Hey, if I could have any law enforcement job ever, you BET I'd take the job that allows me to hunt people. Talk about the ultimate game...hunting bad humans seems like the greatest job. I even took a job as a court agent here in Toronto to work my way through college, hunting down deadbeat dads. That was VERY satisfying!

...and what about the LAPD? I instruct at our academy up here, and I'm always pointing to the LAPD as an example of STRONG policing; The LAPD, for all its' missteps, takes ABSOLUTELY NO SHIT - and, as far as I'm concerned, police forces SHOULD scare the shit out of everyone.

To me, the LAPD is the agency that best sends the bottom-line message any cop is trying to send;

"BEHAVE YOURSELVES."

I agree with a lot of the people in this post. It all depends on what you want to do. I am a cop in Oklahoma. I love it here because the cost of living is affordable, and there are a lot of benefits here that you don't get in the more liberal states. I have a take home car, make about 32,000 a year and the pd pays for my education through reimnbursement. Most agencies here have take home cars, even Tulsa and Oklahoma City that have more than 1000 cops each. Oklahoma Highway Patrol is good and they are accepting applications until May 31, but the academy is tough. Just depends on what you are looking for.

Whatever agency it is anything is better than the NYPD. In NY all the others pay more and are more professional.

WTF, why are NY's finest paid slave wages? As a former New Yorker from Brooklyn, I find this so unsat! With the crap they gotta put up with in the 5 borroughs, they should be paid at least $40,000 to start! That's the only way qualified people will ever think about becoming cops in the big Apple.

For $25,000, I'd rather be back in Iraq fighting the insurgents in Falluja than fighting crack heads in da Bronx!

At least in the corps, I had better body armor on & my trusty M16A4/40mm grenade launcher!

NY cops are woefully underpaid.

I would say any agency that is small. Smaller agencies are more of a family atmosphere and you don't have the politics and BS of a large city. The pay may be less, but you make up for it with shorter commutes and less medical
bills due to less stress.

Unfortunately, Customs and Border Protection with whom I work for was recently rated the lowest agency for moral and turnover in the federal government! We are so large, and always supplied with fresh bodies that the need to care from our brass doesn't come into play. We are averaging around 2 officers a month leaving the ranks in my port alone based on last years 20 that quit. That is not counting retirerments or transfers, just straight up people who have had enough of this place.

I am almost too old to get out, since I want to stay in the area. Around here, the death age is 35 for local policing. They also give all police jobs on a county civil service exam. Hopefully I can deduct my military time and squeak in to a local agency soon. If not, no biggie, I will just silently carry on.

It's pathetic that this country excepts & supports athletes getting $25 milion a yr contracts to hit & catch a baseball, but it b^%$# that cops are overpaid & don't do nothing!

Same goes for our armed services, a Marine PFC is in Iraq right now fighting for his life & all he's getting paid is around $2,500 a month & that's only cuz he's getting extra pay incentives such as combat pay, & tax free zone pay. If he's married, then he gets family seperation pay of around $250-$300 a month! Whoopdee freakin doo!

Being seperated from your family & friends for 18 months in a war zone & having to endure IEDs, RPGs, automatic weapons fire , seeing your buddies blown apart & maimed, getting just 4 hrs sleep a day ought to be worth way more than that!

This country needs to start getting it's priorities in order fast & start appreciating & financially compensate our LEOs & armed services for the sacrifices we are giving in service of our country & protecting our fellow citizens at the possible costs of our lives.

The best agency depends on your individual interest. For the most part each agency has a solid foundation. However, I believe a given agency can be distinctive if they prioritize preventive measures (i.e., background checks, minimizing illegal immigration, etc.).

Well of course I thought one of the very best was my agency. Highly trained guys that backed each other up and worked closely together and even partied together. The pay at the time sucked and the talking heads at city hall were ultra liberals but that was the price you paid for having great people to work with.
Now I thought SDPD was a very good Department to work for but I applied and was accepted for a position with Newport Beach, Ca Police department and they were exceptional. Great opportunity to advance, great pay, incentives for everything and they would pay you to further your education, small department, extra money for firearms proficiency, extra money for special details like motorcycles, etc. I thought I had died and went to heaven when accepted for this agency. Unfortunately I became seriously ill while in the academy and had to resign for financial reasons. Broke my heart as they were really a great department.
