My first arrest was on a failure to appear warrant...and it was my 3rd cousin!  My sarg let me handle the arrest even after I told him.  Guess I'll never forget my first arrest for 2 reasons!

Sorry that is very difficult. Keep in mind you took an oath to protect and serve. Sometimes the job is not easy and your cousin wont hold it against you. He/She was at fault not you. You were just doing your job. Besides it will give you and your cuz something to talk about when you get old. LOL

In your oral interview, did they ask what you'd do if you pulled your mother over for speeding / DUI / whatever?

Well, you've actually LIVED that example (3 times removed).  Tough one.

I think if I had to arrest a family member they would be a little hurt but they would understand, after all they raised me to be a man of integrity.  They wouldn't expect anything less than me doing my job.

It depends on what they were being arrested for, don't you think? After all, they may have lost the meaning of integrity.
