Updated on 1-17-09. Most of the content remains intact. Thank you, The Sarge.

This thread was originally posted on 9-23-07. There are new people to this site and need to review this prior to posting. If want to read the thread in its entirety, go to the Off Duty forum and you can read everyone's remarks. It will be the first entry in the forum. Thanks.

"Attention all LEO’s and those of you who are new to this site- posted 9-23-2007: I have been on this site for a while. And, I want you guys to take heed. I mean this in the strongest terms. It’s ok to talk about our work and to give some advise and input to people who inquire. And it’s ok to quack amongst yourselves about work related matters. However THIS IS A PUBLIC SITE !!! Be very careful not to put out for public consumption tactics, internal intelligence and practices and protocols that are considered breaching officer safety practices and/or information that your agency doesn’t print on the Opinion Page of your local paper.

Be aware of any document that has on the bottom any advisement that admonishes "For Law Enforcement Dissemination Only", or equivalent.

I am seeing people talk about tactics on our procedures on handling terrorist activity, back-up guns, officer involved shootings, internal confidential info that only is going to get someone hurt or compromise your safety. Don’t let your ego get in the way. You don’t need to provide information on this very public website to prove who you are or to impress someone on this site.

Have a good time. But, please, do not “give away your position”.

Thanks,

 The Sarge

p.s. I will be taking a very proactive approach to postings that could be deemed compromising."

HEY HEY HEY THATS WHY HE'S THE SERGEANT.....................................LOL

For so long as one hundred men remain alive, we shall never under any conditions submit to the domination of the English. It is not for glory or riches or honours that we fight, but only for liberty, which no good man will consent to lose but with his life.

hey Sarge I have pondered over this thread for a long time now, and want to bring it to your attention as well as our security-guard conterparts on this site, we need to take extra effort to not expose highly, highly secretive rent-a-cop tactics on this site!!! this a very serious issue, please do not laugh! our rent-a-cop friends are professionals too, and the methods of turning on flashlights, and replaceing light-blubs in record times, is a rent-a-cop safety issue, we wouldn't want the general public to find out about high-tech security guard training IE: how to watch the TV video monitor correctly, how to take a nap without getting caught, the proper method of caring for ones flashlight, these are just a few........LEO's, security guards I hope you take this matter seriously good luck in furture topics on this site!!

That's good to remember, Sarge. I would hope that any LEO worth his salt would know better than to post confidential or restricted intel on this site, through e-mail, or any other medium that could be compromised. I don't think most police departments do enough to restrict information that should not be dissemenated to the public.

Well appreciated topic. This cannot be stressed enough. All those BIG Fortune 500 companies 'safeguard' their 'Trade Secrets'.... I find this to be even MORE important!

Have a Great Day!

You hit the nail on the head! I'm new to this site (actually my first post) but have been a LEO for 10 years now. Some of our "stuff" is secret for a reason. I'd rather stay on this site...not on ODMP.org.

10-4. You are right, I will keep the tactics I used during barking dog complaints to myself. I don't need to be a show off to make friends.

Makes sense. It's like the news reports from the war where the reporter gives too much information about the unit they are traveling with complete with video with identifiable landmarks in the background like buildings, trees or mountain ranges.  Large chunks or key parts of information are usually better protected but breaches are built from assembling tidbits of info that are gathered over time. It's nobodys business. You never know who you are talking to and then who they are then talking to.
