How does your department force are  handle use of force and what types of force are you allowed to use?

My department have rcently told our shift commanders that they must inform the staff not to strike inmates in the face with a closed fist. They state we are not trained in these tactics. In the academy they do teach us boxing two days a week for 12 weeks, I thought that is closed fist and usually goes for the head.

Remember, there is a difference between self defense and control tactics and control techniques. You shouldn't strike in the face unless you were trying to get them to stop biting or spitting anyways...

Anyhoot...you have all these tiny little bones in your hands that you would not want to slam against a hard surface like say- a head of an inmate. The only reason why you would be using strikes is either to defend yourself or other staff or to get to a limb from a non-compliant inmate. Never try to "box" with someone...even the untrained and unfit can get a lucky punch in and render you unconscious. When the fight is on, you should go in grappling distance and gain control of the inmate and try to get them restrained- which is the entire purpose behind control tactics.

Now, if we're talking self-defense techniques...go for the groin, eyes, and throat...use any and all means to defend yourself or other staff.

Does this clear things up?

Do what you have to do to gain positive control.  If his face is the only vulnerable spot available, you had better use your fist.  I guess you could try just slapping him in the cheek, but I'm pretty sure that will be ineffective.

It depends, if your using closed fist, it better be a physical  confrontation. Use of force model can and will be used in court.

Have I punched an inmate, YEP, after he punched a nurse ! Actually we made that 19 year old punk cry. He busted that nurse in the eye a good one. Its on when you assault staff.

Riot hit the nail on the head ()  Seriously.  A boxer's fracture hurts!! and seriously impedes your job performance.  heel of the hand or elbow if stunning/offensive strikes are necessary.

Here in the Wild West, we rough 'em and stuff 'em! Still out of Obama's reach here. Although, I would like to see more Russian tactics. "Strike them until they talk...!"

Yep...when it is with you or another staff I like to say "It's ON like DONKEY KONG!"

If the inmate has a weapon you can use any means, any, to defend your self. That is what we were told in the academy.

Thats a yes and no, we had an incident once, where an inmate had a shank, to protect himself. When we responded, about 90% of the inmates had moved back to a corner (They were out on rec) The inmate with the shank was confronting 3 inmates that supposedly were bullying/beating/stealing his commisary from him up on a regular basis. We proceded to lock as many inmates in, in any cell possible for the moement, then one of the Sgt's began talking with the distraught shank weilding inmate, and as soon as he got close enough, sprayed him, then we cuffed and stuffed him. (I still wish we had Tasers, spray don't work on everyone)

So no one got hurt, use common sense, do what you have to, but use the force needed to defuse the situation.

I would also add he made when of the best shanks I've seen yet.

This guy wanted (and got) protective custody, plus some new charges : )
