I was assigned to 77adam on friday jan 13th 1973 doing a day tour with vinnie stackhouse (det. ret.). vinnies partner and mine were in court so they teamed us up for the day, it was right near the end of the shift when over the drone of the radio runs came a hold up alarm at john and als sporting goods store in the 90 pct..

A precinct unit picked up the call and the radio droned on for moments till a voice gasping for breath  and to the background of shots going off screams: 10-13  10-13 shots fired, officer shot, broadway and mrytle.  And thus began a gunbattle and 47 hour seige with one cop killed and two other wounded..Five members of what was described as an ORTHODOX MUSLIM SECT, had entered  the gun store to rob it of its high power weapons and ammo and during the ensuing gunbattle, easily outgunned us using the weapons from the store.

POLICE OFFICER STEVEN GILROY WAS KILLED IN THE LINE OF DUTY. steve was trying to lay down cover fire so we could rescue the many pinned down and wounded officers. POLICE OFFICER FRANK CARPENTIER, A REALLY COOL COP, WAS CRITICALLY WOUNDED AND JOE OR JOSE ADORNO WAS WOUNDED IN THE ARM. more than 700 nypd were involved in this seige.  These self-described "servants of allah" vowed to have nothing to lose and victory and paradise to gain.

That was the first time the nypd rolled out the tank for the pinned down officer rescue. in the end, the hostages escaped through an old hidden staircase to the roof while the perps were distracted and with no hostages to hide behind and nypd waiting for the word to assault to get payback; the four surrendered. abdul rasheem, salih ali abdullah, dawd ar-rahm, and yusef abdul who was wounded during the initial gunbattle.  all were charged and convicted of murder of a police officer... visit officer gilroys site at NYPD ANGELS.  This was just one of the opening battles i was in... there were more.

The radical Muslim agenda is nothing new.  Too bad the media doesn't realize this.   And this incident is just one of many examples of  the ideology of world-domination.  Take a look four centuries back at 1663:  http://gatesofvienna.blogspot.com/

Unfortunately these are just the types of extremists that have multiplied tenfold in the ensuing years and are now a threat to every civilized country in the world.  The 9-11 Hijackers were the fruit of the actions of these men, and men like them, who have, over the years, hijacked airliners during the 70's and 80's, hijacked the Cruise Ship Achille Lauro, blown up an airliner over Scotland, murdered Israeli Olympic Athletes, blown up passenger trains in Spain, blown up a bus and subway station in London, and numerous other terroristic acts.

Until we, and I mean all of us, understand that these people have but one goal, to eliminate our way of life, then we will continue to live in fear of their potential actions.  We must stop being a "Paper Tiger" and react swiftly and violently to any and all acts of terrorism.

The recent U.S. raid into Syria to take out a suspected Terrorist is one small step in the right direction.  I watched TV tonight as the Syrian politicians expressed their shock and dismay at the actions of the U. S. military in conducting this raid.  Some have demanded an "Investigation" and an "Apology" from the U.S. Governmant.  From my perspective Syria deserved neither.  They have sat idley by for the past several years as Al Qaeda and other radical extremist groups use their border areas with Iraq as a training and staging ground for raids into Iraq to attack and kill American troops.  If the Syrians won't take any action to stop this activity then it is incumbent upon our military to strike and eradicate these threats to our way of life.  The same masage needs to be sent to other countries that harbor such terrorists too.

I have to agree. Acts of terror have been going on for thousands of years. They only thing they understand the, Islamic fundamentalists that is, is the sword. It is very difficult to fight an enemy that does not mind dying, as a matter of fact wants to die. We should have blown the shit out of them in Afghanistan and once they were eradicated there then we move on to the next one they would have moved but we would have followed. We need to capture Bin Laden and get it over with, Saddam was a patsy for him and for the US government. The US government used Saddam's capture, trial and execution to placate the citizens who wanted Bin Laden. Bin Laden was responsible for 911 not Saddam. But we must act swiftly and mightly which I feel until recently we have not done, we must find and destroy Osama Bin Laden until then the war on terror is not over I for one want revenge for what he has done. GOD BLESS THE MEN AND WOMEN FIGHTING FOR OUR COUNTRY EVERYDAY.

yup, and it aint gonna get better any time real soon, but part of the theme for this story is that it took place omg 35 years ago? i'm  getting f--kin old, in brooklyn ny, not kandahar, beirut, or sadar city.  when the next round of shots are fired, watch this homegrown terrorist network closely friends...be on alert on special occasions, anniversaries of events,  could you imagine a group or groups tryin to disrupt the us elections?   cant be done?  you know better.  they tried and succeded in spain.  i'm not talking about the two idiot skinheads after obama here....i almost went on a rant but had to delete due to non leo's reading these sites.

That's really sad news.  Political correctness run amok does not allow us to protect ourselves from these scum.

we were heavily outgunned, as this was the plan for the robbery, to procure high power weapons. that is POLICE OFFICER STEVEN GILROY OF ESS#8 lying with his feet facing the camera. NOW, LET US NOT GET CONFUSED HERE, THIS PERSON THEY ARE RELEASING ISN'T JUST ONE OF FOUR WHO DID THE CRIME. THIS MAN IS THE ONE WHO ACTUALLY WATCHED THIS POLICE OFFICER THRU A HIGH POWER RIFLE SCOPE, PEERING AROUND AN EL TRAIN BEAM, WAITING, TAKING HIS TIME, TILL HE TOOK  THE SHOT, STRIKING THE OFFICER IN THE HEAD AND KILLING HIM

On the 3rd day, the hostages escaped thru a hidden stairway to the roof, without their human shields, the people who professed to go out in a blaze of glory meekly surrendered .

HERE ARE TWO MORE PHOTOS OF SEIGE AT JOHN AND ALS, ONE WHOS THE NYPD TANK'S FIRST PUBLIC APPEARANCE, it happens that my wife at the time was attending a wake and i had called earlier saying i was involved in something and did not know when i would be home so she should attend the wake without me so she and another couple went and during the wake all the people ran outside onto the street in response to the mass of sirens as NYPD Highway Unit 2 and Emergency serivces Units with over twenty units escorted a tractor towing a low-boy on which was mounted a TANK emblazoned on the sides with the words POLICE. I guess we have an idea where Mike is tonight my wifes friend commented.

The second photo shows two close friends of mine taking cover behind a patrol car during the seige, i am just to the left off camera.

After 9/11 my department provided specialized anti-terrorism detection and interdiction training.

Terrorists use violence against innocent civilians, causing murder and mayhem in order to strike terror in society.  There are only two ways to deal with terrorists, apprehend them or eliminate them.
