Posted about 1 year ago Can a person actually pay for Police Academy training and go through the whole process before even applying or getting hired onto a PD? I have heard it can cost somewhere around $11,000 if a person choses to do so before applying......... |

| Posted about 1 year ago In Texas you can.I did it.It was in 1994 but I think I only paid about $1500. You can sleep without fear tonight because there are others standing by to due violence on your behalf. |

| Posted about 1 year ago I say again it was in 1994.At that time there were not that many positions available and alot of people went that route. But I have heard thats its quite a bit more these days. You can sleep without fear tonight because there are others standing by to due violence on your behalf. |

| Posted about 1 year ago In Illinois I was told no you cannot put yourself through the academy any more the part-time academy is only $1900 so I was going to try to go through the Mobile Training Units which IS certified through the Law Enforcement Training and Standards Board but once again they told me NO you had to be hired before entry. |

| Posted 10 months ago We still have some depts. that pay you while you are in the academy. I've heard it's about $3000 in Ohio, if you go on your own to a local academy. |

| Posted 10 months ago When I went to the Cook County Sheriff's Police Academy in 1994, the cost was about $1400.00. We went home after classes. We had to pay for our Academy uniforms, PT clothes, firearm and some other items. Most Departments usually foot the bill on these items. The cost now for the Academy probably has gone up, especially since the Academy is now at Triton College (I did my time in Maywood at the court facility). When I was a Recruit Supervisor at the Illinois State Police Academy in 2004, the cost was about $2500.00. There you are housed in dorms and fed 3 meals in the cafeteria. Most Academies in Illinois will not let you attend unless you are sponsored by an Agency. Just because you trained for something, doesn't mean you're prepared for it. - Anonymous

| Posted 7 months ago I was in PTI at the university of Illinois 2 years ago and we did not have to pay and we were paid while there. Just hope that your dept pays out OT cause there were days that we went from 0530 to 2200 and only had a hour break for meals. |

I did the same thing. Used my National Guard to pay 100% of the tuition (since Texas Guardsmen get state and federal tuition assistance) , and then used the regular Army GI Bill and the National Guard "kicker" (for critical mos') to collect a monthly stipend. End up not having to pay out of pocket for anything. Texas is good about having a Law Enforcement Academy at almost every major community college it seems. I like that about Texas, you dont have to wait to be hired to do all you need to start working as a cop...you can take the initiative, get into an academy, pass the TCLEOSE, and enter the hiring process with a head up. |

| Posted 7 months ago I concur. For the NCBLET, if you are sponsored by an agency, all tuition costs are waived. In the fall, we will be responsible for our books, uniforms, physicals, and other access fees for the college but that is it. NCBLET also covers 5 different subjects (for those going for their AAS in CJ) including Criminal Law, Constitutional Law, Civil Liability, Court Procedure and Evidence, and Investigative Principles. The entire course encompasses 624 hours and is worth 19 credit hours. The total cost out of pocket for me will be around $800 if you figure in PT gear. Oh, and we get to shoot a ton of ammo and drive cars real fast along with being able to go hands on and doing case-based scenarios. I cannot wait for August! You can't cure stupid. |

| Posted 4 months ago Another Texan......Im going to the academy on my own, however Im in the hiring process for a couple differnet agencies and they will start to pay while Im in it if I get hired. The academy is about 3500 dollars, but Im not paying a dime, in fact Im getting paid to go. The new GI Bill is paying the full tution and then paying me 1500 dollars a month and then a 1000 dollar bonus at the end of it for books and supplies. The academy is 16 weeks and I will make about 7000 dollars cash while Im at it, because of the GI Bill. The only thing you have to do is die. |

| Posted 4 months ago Any of the State of Illinois Police Academies require that you are sponsored, hired, sworn by an Agency or Department. They are free of cost to any attendee. The cost of the Academy is picked up by the Department or Agency. You are paid by your Department while at the Academy your salary. This is why most 1st year/starting pay is so low, because of you are in training (Academy and Field Training). That's how it works in Illinois. Other places may differ. Just because you trained for something, doesn't mean you're prepared for it. - Anonymous

| Posted 4 months ago This should have been asked as a new topic. Please post an introduction since your profile really doesn't say much about you. I am not a Will County Deputy, but I work for Joliet PD, and I can find out for you. Good luck. Just because you trained for something, doesn't mean you're prepared for it. - Anonymous
