Posted over 4 years ago Good morning all, I am currently a private pilot and own a Cherokee 140. I have been flying for eight years. I am about to start on my instrument rating in the next year. I have occasionaly had an interest in flying helpicopters but the cost is very cost prohibitive. There is a airport close to me that does helicopter training. I am open to any other suggestions.

Posted over 4 years ago Sgt., Congrats on your future instrument rating. I have completed ground school and gotten my flight physical. I will begin my flight lessons in the next thirty (30) days. I would really like to find a Piper Cherokee or Comanche 180 in good shape with not too many hrs. SMOH. Sorry, I don't have any information regarding helicopters. I've always wanted fo fly fixed wing and am going to obtain my instrument rating as well. Best of luck to you. Stay safe & God bless. Charles

Posted over 4 years ago Thanks Charles, I am partners in a Cherokee 140. We just overhauled the engine and upgraded it to 160hp last winter. It is amazing what 10 hp will do for performance. I would check around for Cherokee's, the prices are pretty good right now. I would wait on the Comanche right now. The insurance would be outragous now with low time and a complex plane. I rode in a helicopter a couple of years ago and had fun, different but fun. This is just a dream of flying helicopters. I do not know if I am corrdinated enough to fly them. The other thing is cost. They are so expensive to fly I can not justify the cost. Thanks and good luck with your private. Please keep me posted on your progress. Darrell

Posted over 4 years ago A former LEO on our department had his pilots license. He joined the State Police. After his training and a few years later the SP sent him to helicopter school and he got certified for that. Later he had to go to another school to fly helicopters the LA STATE POLICE way. No expense to him. He has always been an accomplished pilot since he was a youngster. Hope you find a way like that.

Posted over 4 years ago Hey Sgt, A great tool that helped me with instrument flight was Microsoft Flight Simulator. After a few hours of IMC flight on the sim, my very first ILS approach was near perfect. I was familiar with the panel and knew what to look for. My instructor was impressed and it relieved a lot of tension on me. Before starting your instrument training, you should have a good understanding of precision and non-precision approaches, approach plates, VOR nav, auto pilot systems (full or heading/ alt hold), cockpit mgt during single pilot IFR (air safety foundation has a good course online) and the effects of spatial disorientation. The best route that I can think of for rotory-wing training is military or have the dept pay the tab. You could always win the lottery!! I hope some of this helps. Happy and safe flying!!! Mike

| Posted over 4 years ago Thanks Mike, I heard Santa is getting me the flight simulator with the controls. The elves at Sporty's are behind and it is on back order. I just did my bi-annual and he had me do some basic climbs, decents, climbing and descending turns under the hood. I have to say it has been a while since I was sweating that much while flying, and this was basic stuff. I look forward to more. I take many of the classes for the AOPA airsaftey but I stay away from the IFR portion since my knowledge is very limited. I will start with Sporty's IFR DVD after the first of the year. As far as helicopters, it is just a dream. Maybe someday when I grow up!!Thanks for the advice.
