Background Check - How Long?

Posted over 4 years ago How long does the background check typically take? My husband has passed the written and the physical agility test and just turned in his background packet today. Next steps for this department are: Polygraph, Psychological Written Exam, Psych. Clinical Exam, Physical and finally interview with the Chief! So I'm just wondering how long this part of the process normally takes ... his background is clean and his references are all easily reachable so it shouldn't be difficult for the investigator to get a hold of anybody. I'm hoping it takes at LEAST a week ... he had to get a new suit (he's a big guy, muscular, and grew out of the shoulders and arms of his old suit). It won't be ready until next week ... 50 Long jacket and a 34 in" waist = HEAVY alterations!
Thanks! |

| Posted over 4 years ago Many background checks may take longer depending upon how many places he has lived before. The process is usually not rushed and may take several months to complete. Departments normally will not even give you an estimate on time to complete a BI. There is really no normal time for them to finish an investigation as a lot depends upon what resources the department has available to do that kind of work. |

| Posted over 4 years ago A thorough check takes a minimum of a few weeks. It's not simply a matter of reviewing his packet. ALL information will need to be verified. We conduct history checks at all levels, credit reports, interview neighbors, etc. I'd say you will have plenty of time for getting the suit altered. We normally start the background checks six months prior to hiring time. All depends on the agency. I wish him well. We could definitely use good people...... | Posted over 4 years ago If it takes more than two weeks you need to call and find out why.... Thank you! The pay cut is a little scary for us ... but working in a dead end job you hate is scarier. He's always wanted this - now is as good a time as any to go for it. The next Academy starts in January so I guess we'll know something solid by then at least. And I feel better knowing he'll have his suit altered, pressed and ready to go in plenty of time! Thanks again for the well wishes! |
