How do you feel when someone calls you a guard? I know that many in the public have been conditioned, by the media and movies , to refer to Correctional Officers as "guards". It drives me crazy!!!!! What do you want to be called?

Here is my 2 cents. I have statutory arrest authority anywhere in my state, I have to go through a 14 week academy, I carry off duty. So yes, I believe Officer is more befitting then guard. The inmates dont even call us guards, on the job it is either C.O. or Officer Diveley....but again, just my 2 cents

I prefer to be called a Corrections Officer. I am a law enforcement officer in NJ and I believe according to HR218 as long as I can continue to qualify I can carry anywhere in the great country we live.

Don't sweat being called a guard, tv/movies always portray us as mean sadistic bastards or being on the take. I personally rarely stop anywhere in uniform, as most public response is negative. The public is truely clueless as to what happens behind the walls, as long as no one escapes or is killed they really don't care.

I usally do respond if someone calls me a guard with, guards work at the mall.

We have two unions working for the Sheriff's Dept. We are called Corrections Officers, they are called Deputy Sheriff- Officers. We both go through the same Academy but the Sheriff hasn't been successful in merging the unions (been 8 yrs so far). But we rib our brother officers that when you look in the budget it say we are Officers and they are Guards. I explain to people that I am a Corrections Officer, not a Guard or Police Officer.

My POST certification says Correctional Officer.  My badge says Correctional Officer.  My paystub says Correctional Officer.  My city newspaper calls us guards.

I don't really care how the public percieves me - I will continue to put my life on the line to protect them.

The only thing that really matters is that the inmates call me Sir and recognize my authority.

guard is so outdated and mainly

used for unarmed security guards.

Just my opinion.
