I don't know how you men and women of law enforcement do it.

It seems to me that being a law enforcement officer is like being on a social submarine.

Only the people that are in the submarine with you see what you go through and what the costs and risks are on a daily basis.

Thank God,you folks do what you do.

I would'nt want to have to face the decisions and daily risks you do everyday.

I don't have the tolerance to put up with the BS  and bodily risk you do everyday.

Thank you for trying to stop the daily stupidity you see everyday.

You all make a very big difference.

This is a job like no other.  Despite the costs that you pay, both physically and emotionally, the rewards are boundless and extremely fulfilling. It is, without doubt, the best job in the world!

 Absolutely Correct.

Very good post. Only thing I don't agree with is the one day a month off thing. Cops in my area at least work 10 hour shifts, 4 days on, and 4 days off. Holidays are worked by a Skeleton crew of Officers, so the ones that don't care for working Holidays can work.

One thing I enjoy about my community is that while it is Liberal, we all see and appreciate the need for our great Policing Services that keep our County one of the safest in the State, and the Country. For that, we cannot give them enough thanks. It's a shame the economic downturn is giving our Departments hard times. My County used to run its Police Helicopter 24-7, but due to budget cuts, it only goes up when requested. Mounted Units have received Cutbacks, and they're no longer training any more K9 Dog unit's until the others are retired. They haven't hired a class this year as planned because they can't afford it.

Hopefully, things get better. One thing you should add to your list is that sometimes, as an Officer, you'll have to work with Sub-par hand-me-down equipment, especially in a time when nobody has money.

Excellent post retleo. I also tell the new guys that we live in a fish bowl the entire community is watching us and what we do. If you don't come to a complete stop at a stop sign the next person you pull over will remember this and let you know about it. Always watch your 6 and your actions both on duty and off you never know who will notice. Best job I ever had in the 30 + years of employment. Wish I had started this gig when I was younger.

Retleo said it pretty damn perfect, all I would add is that other than the military there is no other proffession that you can say your co-workers would die for you.
