Some agencies allow new officers to do road time prior to going to the Academy.  Does your agency allow this?  Under what circumstances? (firearms quals, etc).

I know that Austin Police Department in Austin, TX allows ride alongs for prospective cadets, officers and civilians alike.

I think the only real difference is that new hires may receive priority on the list, but I'm not 100% on that.

I do know that if you are a prospective employee, then some of the supervisors do not want you riding with the same person every time so that you can gain different perspectives.

In any event, A background check is required.
