Here is a starting place for your "Pre-academy" questions.  One question at a time, and make sure that you understand that academy standards can vary from state-to-state, so the answer that you get may not apply to your state (be forewarned).

How's the classroom Vs hands-on training? Some of us neanderathals learn better when something is put into practice rather than theory. I'm sure the answer to this varies a lot state to state.

I found that for me the academy was a place to learn...what I was going to really learn later.  It gave me the does and don'ts of the law.  I learned some good practical techniques that I use every now and then.  The academy basically told me the "why to" while the streets taught me the "how to"...for the most part.

For the Arizona Law Enforcement Academy, it was a little of both..  For us, the instructors taught the material in a way that everyone understood.  Even the those of us who were acedemically challenged were able to get through.  Even though the instructors are screaming at you, they still want you to succede.
