I am just doing some research on any grants, programs, or general ideas of how to get a K9 proposal together and where to take it from there.  If anyone has anything that could help, especially anything specific to Kentucky, I would appreciate your advice and/or opinions.  Remember, this is only research at this point for me.

Thanks

You can try USPCA.com or type United States Police Canine Association into your browser. The other is NAPWDA. Just type into your browser and go with the link.

I am in the process of trying to get my department to go in that direction and seem to have some good support from my Captain and the Major.  I work as a Game Warden and have talked with others on this website about it and they seem to have some really good info and have a pretty good start so far.  The only issue I am having is I work in the State of Texas and cannot find any training facility that is in the state that does the training for wildlife detection.  All academies for this K9 training are all out of state.  I wish I could find on that was in the state or a facility that would be willing to do it.  I think that that may be my only hang up on getting this started with our department.  I have talked with K9Warden and fbellino about this and they both have given me some really good ideas and some really good help as far as how and where to get one started.

From what I have seen Global is an awesome company. There is a former Global trainer here in my local area who is training dogs, and the dogs are awesome from what I have seen. So yeah check into the Global folks.

Awesome guys thanks.  I will check them out.  I appreciate all the help, and I just hope that they know of or can do some of the wildlife detection.

problem is getting grants for K-9's is not very popular.  If you go to the United States Justice Portal, there are grants to obtain "explosive" dogs.  The ATF gives out money since 9/11 for explosive K-9's.  Now you can train the explosive detection K-9's for patrol work as well.  If your looking to get a drug/patrol dog then there really isn't money out there for them.  The way to go about that is first find a reputable trainer and get costs.  Have all the figures in hand  (ie... purchase, initial training, monthly maintenance training, outfitting a vehicle, home kennel, travel kennel, vet care, etc...) there's a lot of start up costs.  You can expect to pay roughly $11,000-$15,000 just for the dog and initial training depending on whether its a patrol/narcotics, or explosive/patrol, or a single purpose dog.

Next go out into your community with a letter and what kind of costs your looking to get from them to support a k-9 program.  be ready to answer questions on why, where, how etc...  If you have a Wal-mart in your area, go to them.  Wal-mart has been very supportive in our area with K-9's.  Make sure you hand deliver letters or go in person, this brings a lot more person with the request and they are more likely to give you money then if you just mail it to them.

Best of luck, its a rewarding job!!

Oh, and check out www.castlek9.com  We have gotten our K-9's there for years, and he is extremely reputable.  People come from all over the country and the world to obtain dogs from him as well as his training.  All your basic costs are online there.

Another trainer is www.qualityk9concepts.com they have some good deals on K9's and will work hard with law enforcement to get a K9 in budget. Good payment plans and cost. They are all about getting K9's out on the street it seems more so than they are about making the big bucks. Mr. Hammond the owner said he tries to get the big bucks of the contract K9 buyers so that law enforcement can get them on the low. Check them out.

Well an update on my deal.  I just talked with my prior Captain which is now the Major over training in our department and he said that as it stands right now he doesn't see the upper brass approving that.  I also found out that my deadline is actually coming up pretty soon and running out of time to get my stuff together.  I told me current Cpt. to just wait on my proposal until next year.  He responded to that is good with him that way we can try to get the support of the upper brass and get this thing rolling, he really likes the idea and thinks that we can get it approved if we do this right.  I am going to continue trying to get everything that I have been contacting people with and get all my ducks in a row so that I have everything prepared and ready for the next go round.
