If your state requires a front plate, yes. If they don't, you can put pretty much anything you want on it.

Short answer: Yes! The numbers and letters are just part of the important information provided by the license plate. The issuing state and expiration dates are required to be visible as well. Not all states have require plates front and back. Arkansas requires plates on the back only.

Thanks! I thought so. It was almost totally invisible. At certain times of day, it would be just like those plastic sheets that are made to distort the view.................a BIG blurrrrrrrrrrrr....!

Question, I have seen some out of state pick-up trucks that have the word truck on the license plate and other states do not, is there any reason for that?

New Jersey had the title "Commercial Vehicle" on the plates so it's easy to know the purpose of the plate. Hope that helps you.

Years ago on the Parkway, I was behind a trooper, who pulled to the shoulder and then in behind me. I couldn't figure out why he was stopping me. Sure enough, somehow my front plate was bent and one of the letters was obscured. He wrote me for "front plate not easily visible".

In Texas SUV's can be registered as a truck or as a Passenger vehicle. Trucks carry the same, I believe, policy. The only difference I ever knew was that the cost for a truck plate as opposed to a passenger vehicle plate was cheaper. I do not know if that remains the same today. Any troopers on here??

Thanks.

OK, as most of u can notice in my profile pic that someone has tampered with the passenger rocker molding on my car, apparently the same (or different) idiot, (can't prove it cause I don't know who did it) tampered with my front license plate and now it is missing the last letter. I park my car head on ,as per rules and regulations where I go to park in supermarkets, stores, malls and garages I really have no idea whats going on in the front since I approach from the rear. I've once been questioned but I told the officer that someone tampered and ripped it off., then the officer said "get new plates or you WILL get a ticket, not necessarily from me, but from someone else", but other times when I was driving no officer have seemed to notice it, basically they are looking more for speeders, inspection stickers, seatbelts and cell phone users plus other violations they consider "stoppable", but frankly I need the ticket, plus 6 points of identification plus the damaged front and undamaged rear if I am going to get the new plates. So............I guess its just a matter of time before my luck runs out and I DO get that ticket.

To EB3, will u arrest me if I came down to Texas with my car missing the last digit off my plate (because u probably already know the story from this post)?

Why would you want anything to look european?
No front tags in Alabama, but you can deface the tag if you would like to meet more Law Enforcement Officers conducting traffic stops for displaying an improper tag.

In Louisiana, you can't even have a "Support Sheriff's Association" frame on the license plate cover up any part of the plate including the name of the State.  I know someone who got stopped because this frame covered up part of the "North Carolina" State name on the plate.  Now, no ticket was issued, but it was a warning.

to Bmorgan: If someone smashed out my headlight or whatever other part of my car is deemed "necessary to drive safely" (tires, backlight, etc.) , I would report it to the police, ( IN A NY MINUTE!! ) the item HAS to perform some sort of "function" electrical or whatever to keep the car running. (OK if someone shot up my car full of bulletholes, I would report that cause they might've hit something important to the car to prevent it from running properly ) the fact that someone tampered with my plate and rocker molding is not that big of deal to me,  ( those are NON functioning purely decorational items that deem no need to be reported cause it dosen't serve a purpose to keep the vehicle running )  To everyone else it might be, but not to me, and you're right, theres bigger things to worry about than some small stupid minor traffic infraction. I DO promise u and every other single officer that could be reading this, it will get fixed when the time comes.

Right now I have other things ( personal that I don't wish to disclose to u or anyone else ) to worry about, but it WILL be fixed.

What personal issues could keep you from getting a new license plate, how hard could that process be. I mean I'm not trying to trivialize any personal problems in your life, I just don't see what would actually prevent you from solving the problem. Now, this may not seem very important compared to them, that is understandable. But when you get a ticket, you certainly will wish you didn't wait "for the time to come"...whatever that is supposed to mean.

I thank u all for the warning, but in order to get the replacement plate AND /OR new plates, I need the ticket + the 6 points of ID and the plates to get the new one(s)  without the ticket, theres no point in going to the DMV. (funny, today in broad daylight I was out and about and NOT one cop noticed the letter missing in the front, not even the local cop that was in front of me who was following an ambulance (no lights and sirens wailing)

Reminds me of the time I accidently put my registration sticker on upside down. It looked like a '6' instead of the 9 it was supposed to be. I got a 'method of display' ticket.

Happened to me too.........  Did some fast talking, and I was good to go, just had to get another one, they must use cement for us to stick them on!

I say, that is funny.......when NJ HAD those stickers, I used to make sure mine were on the correct way. and to Texas2Step: You can pick out a personalized plate, I however prefer the standard issue plates.

I had to buy a new sticker too. I don't recall having to pay a fine on the ticket. The cop was quite amused that I shorted myself out of 3 months of registration.
