5 years, also still a rookie. The chief to the neighboring town just retired with 46 years on though.

Odin: In my opinion, I think you have that backwards. In small departments you may handle less calls but you handle more. I worked in a small department for years and did my own criminal investigations form start to finish, wrote my own reports, did my own court prosecutions and had to learn how to do more because we had less resources and less supervisors. There is a saying that someone in a large organization may have 1 year of experience 20 times where a small town officer has 20 years of experience 1 time. I do agree with that it depends on the officer's ability to learn, regardless of the size of the agency.

32 years - Started out in the USAF Security Police, then moved to TX where I went with a municipal police force. Retired from there and am now chief of a one-man police force (but the boss is easy to get along with). I love it as much today as I did in '75!

8 years Corrections at the same time a Reserve Deputy, 1 year Dispatcher, 13 years Sheriff's Deputy. Still having fun and feel like a youngin' but when a Recruit calls me mam' sure don't feel like one then.
