I am currently serving in the Air Force. I am a crew chief for the F-16 right now. However, I want to go to college to complete a criminal justice degree and I want to work my way up to become a CSI. However, my problem is what type of job should I cross train to so that it will improve my chances for doing what I want to do. I need help finding out when I can cross-train since I am a 6 year enlistee and what I should change to and how the process actually works.

I would look into OSI or Security Forces, but with SF you have to put in for investigations and then go to training for that and your base may already have an investigator or two. So OSI is probably your best bet. Only downfall They deploy all the time at moments notice

If you are an F16 crew chief, how come your profile says Little Rock AFB, AR and location Sumter, SC? Are you at Shaw? If you haven't posted an intro yet, I would before the LEO's get on ya.

I agree with bradleyk86, go OSI. You get federal credentials. I looked into it a few years ago, but being married it was not the right thing at the time.

Well I don't know why it says I'm at Little Rock haha. Thanks for the head up I will change it. And I didn't know anything about OSI did not think it was an option. However, I rather do OSI than security forces. Plus my wife understands about deployment and I will already deploy and go tdy a lot with the unit I am at with Shaw. So the deploying a lot wouldn't be a problem. Thanks for the posts and if you have any more information on cross training to OSI and such it would be great. Thanks again.

OSI is not a career path in the AF in the respect that it is not something you can just cross train into.  You must apply and be accepted.  If you go to your local AFOSI office they will get you started.  If you are interested in investigations specifically, OSI is your best route.

Best of luck.

Enlisted Air Force members may apply for special agent duty once they've first served in another career field. Those eligible are master sergeants, technical sergeants, and staff sergeants with fewer than 12 years of military service and senior airmen with fewer than six years of service. (Grade restrictions may be waived in special or unusual circumstances.)

Airmen interested in serving as a Special Agent, should contact the nearest AFOSI detachment for the latest information regarding eligibility criteria and the application process.

Got this from AF website.  I had a Flight Chief that was going apply and they told him about deployments and he change his mind. Let us know how everything goes with it and good luck

Thanks for the advice. I did some research and found the same things to be true. So I figure right now I will concentrate on completing my criminal just degree and my the time that is over than it should be around my reenlistment. So, I will start talking to the afosi closer to then I believe would be my best options.

Good luck with that air4ce. Just looking out for posers on the site. That kinda stuff pisses pele off around here, and they have had some really bad knock down drag outs around here. Anyway, OSI is something you have to apply for. If it doesn't work, or you don't qualify, PM me and we'll see wht else we can help you with.

Thanks for the help USAFE7. I really hope it works out, because it is truly what I want to do. I like being a crew chief, but it isn't what I believe my calling is.

I am not an AF type but the military is pretty much the military.  My personal advice, and this is coming from being a civilian LEO as well.  I Strongly suggest taking Business Management or other management classes.  The reasons are obvious, but everyone's aspiration should be to excell to the top of wherever they are.  With that in mind, you are going ot have to run a business at some point.  Police Departments are businesses and they need managers.  Even the bottom of the bucket rookie needs management skills.  Granted, you probably learned them in the military but as cops, we manage the worst of the worst; the thug cruising the streets.

If oyu plan to go federal, most want a 4 year degree.  You will learn just about everything else in the academy and while in the FTO phase.  If you really want CJ, maybe consider minoring in it.

Good luck Zoomie.

I was in the SF for a 5 years 11 months and 1 day.... I had my chance to cross train over to OSI, but gave that up to be a CATM Instructor.... dumb dumb dumb!! If you wanna be in LE on the outside,, go OSI, freaking RETIRE OSI, and then go federal!!! You will be very happy with that route, if I were a smart man I'd go back in the AF and try that route. But Everyone knows I'm not that smart... just ask Angelssix! Shes deployed with me before.

Haha. Yeah well  I have to wait about 5 months before I can start taking classes, but yeah I am going to start as soon as I can. My major is obviously going to be criminal justice, but yeah I was thinking of having csi as my minor. Then try everything I can to be accepted to OSI.
