Hi, my name is John and I am very interested in becoming a deputy sheriff in Florida.  The main reason why I am posting this post is that I have some questions that I was wondering if anyone here could help me with.  Your help would be great! My first question is what sheriff department in Florida hires the most?  My second question is how high you have to score on the CJBAT  to get into the academy to get your Florida certification.  Also does anyone have any contact info were I can get help to prepare for the CJBAT, Thanks so much!

Have you tried entering "CJBAT" into Google? L.E. Agencies all over are hiring. You should also do an introduction post or some of the folks around here might pick on you a bit.

Go to www.fdle.state.fl.us.  You can also contact any college that has an academy.  Most departments in the state require you to pay your own way through the basic class before being hired.

To be honest I have been here so long that we did not do Intro post when I came on board. I think they are done in the lobby. I think Tlwinkles knows how to post one.

CJBAT AKA FBAT 79% is passing score. Pass that and take your test score to your ohysical agility test. Once you past that you will have to pay for your background, poly, drug testing, and oral. Then if you are accepted to the academy you can start applying to departments within 2 months of your graduation. I would suggest finding out which departments will or won't hire without a college degree if you don't have one. That is the route I am personally taking, sort of getting a later start than some at 30 years old and being self employed since 19.

Good luck!

Good luck John and on your profile, you are a civilian not a Deputy Sheriff.

After you complete the academy you will have to pay $200 (or it was when I took it) to sit for the state officer certification exam.  After you pass this you will be eligible for certification but not certified.  Once you are hired by an agency they will apply for your certificate.

When I took this test it took me almost the full amount of time. If you had a hard time with it I would suggest getting a GED study guide to brush up on your math skills and reading comprehension. Essentially that's what most of this test consists of.

I took the test, attended 3 terms of college (not required), and now I start the academy May 12. My orientation for the program is tonight. I'm hoping to complete this program (graduate in Oct.), and get hired on as soon as possible. Once I get hired I will put school on the back burner while I'm in field training so I don't overload myself. I will then continue on with my college attendance to get my degree. I feel that it will help in the long run with promotions.

What academy are you wanting to attend?

I am currently in the process of taking my CJBAT in Broward County.Where in Florida do you want to apply? Like it was said on the posts, you need to do your research on which departments are hiring and what are their requirements. In order to take your CJBAT you will need to contact your local Community College or testing center for the CJBAT before applying for the academy, if not hired by a department. Usually the College or testing center have a website where you can get information on what to study and the dates of the testing.

Good Luck!!
