Posted over 5 years ago I'm interested in SO many areas of Law enforcement. Where do you start? and what do you need to be able to work the the Dogs become a K9 officer? Do you have to be a police officer, or not? |

| Posted over 5 years ago In most all departments you start at the bottom in patrol and you have to have at least 2 years on before putting in for a special unit. most specialty units are very close knit and really hard to get into mainly because there is no turnover. but yes you have to be a Police Officer in order to be in a Police Specialty unit....hope that helped |

| Posted over 5 years ago Yeah, most people I've talked to, it has taken the about 2 years too. There are some places hiring k9 handlers, but aren't related to an leo k9 position... |

| Posted over 5 years ago I wouldn't mind being a handler... it would give me a good excuse to finaly get my german shepard I have been wanting for sooo long! I'll just stop in to the agency close to my house and ask around. |

| Posted over 5 years ago If you want to just handle Dog, go private. You need to have a PO heart if you want to handle police dogs. Hello my name is Inigo Montoya, you killed my father, prepare to die. "It's not a constitutional violation for a police officer to be a jerk." | Posted over 5 years ago Umm.. I would recommend voluntering (at least for a while) for a "master trainer" also you could maybe apply for Petsmart or Petco to become an obedience instructer (which would give you some experience) I know a group here in CA (I think in someother places too) called Interquest k9 (maybe interquestk9.com) ?? They will take you and train you... They use both narcitics and explosives detection dogs.... I would recommend going with narcotics first (so you get used to the work (and less pressure- not as many worries about getting blown up!!!) I hope this helps!! |

| Posted over 5 years ago Have you given any thought to the armed services, The Air force has an excellent K-9 opertaions section in the security forces and you can get your hands on experiance through the Military either reserves or active duty, the ARMY has a impressive K-9 section through the MPs also. |

| Posted over 5 years ago Ya the K9 school at Lackland AFB, San Antonio,Texas is a wonderful start... although ya, you would have to enlist and even then wait for around 3 years to be able to qualify for that. Annnddd most contractors ( dyncorp, Triple Canopy, and everyones favorite BLACKWATER) require 3 to 5 years experience working a dog. Everything you do can get you killed, including doing nothing at all.. |
