What do you think the officer did wrong here?

The officer lost control of this in no time flat! He was oblivious to the fact that mouthy passenger had exited the vehicle and walked around the front of the truck until he was right next to him. He began to argue with him, then went back and forth with arresting him even after the guy placed his hands on him. The officer needed to create distance and he didn't do it. Once the fight started it looked like the old man tried to grab his gun...at this point it became a deadly force incident. Don't get me started on the shovel! Pops would be lucky to be alive if that happened here. When folks start doing their own thing and disregarding what you are telling them to do, that should be a HUGE red flag. I would have no problem with proning them both out and cuffing both of them long before it got physical.

Both of you are right, and when I saw the video I was very surprised to see how much this officer was willing to take. He should never have let it elevated to what it did; I would never had allowed a verbal confrontation. They posed a threat, and he should have arrested a while ago.. but we learn from our mistakes, he's luck that wasn't his last mistake.

He never had control of the stop from the beginning. You must always be in control of your stop, calls, etc or you will end up dead or hurt.

Just as ODIN said in his other post...You have to be ready to go hand to hand. This cop did not have control of the situation however.

I'd like to know where the backup was also. It should have been called long before it became physical. As soo as the passenger got out of the vehicle he lost control of the situation.Thank god it won't be his last mistake.

It should never have gotten physical. The passenger would have eaten dirt quick for getting out and bowing up like that. And grandpaw...well, lets just say that someone else would have been using a shovel as soon as he started digging around in the camper of the truck. An officer that I knew years ago that was killed in the line of duty told me, "boy you do whatever you have to do to get home, don't worry about what you have to do to get there, It's better to be tried by 12 than carried by 6". I'll always live by those words of wisdom. Rest in peace David King.

You will meet them doing various other things with resolve, but their interest rarely holds because after the other thing ordinary life is as flat as the taste of wine after the taste buds have been burned off your tongue." "Deep breath"....O.K. here's how I see it. I do not like to monday morning quarterback another officer especially if i wasn't there, but here goes. 1.) Distance, distance, distance. Notice how close he was to the little short mouthy guy when he took his eyes off of him completely to put is notebook back in his shirt pocket with both hands. Distance kills...distance saves. 2.) I can' t speak for everyone (I feel safe on saying this on behalf of Odin tho) I am not, lemme say that again NOT gonna stand there and argue with some mouthy asshole on any topic let alone A. put your hands on the car, B. Don't touch me again (did he really say that? for Chrissakes touch me once and I promise I will touch you a bunch, really really hard), C. get on the ground, or D. (i'll stop with this one, but I could go on) Drop the shovel.
3.) You will, if you do this job long enough, find yourself in a situation where you are locked up hand to hand. If this occurrs and you absolutely cannot take one hand away to get to an intermediate weapon or your hand gun, to quote a certain Canadian comedian from India, "somebody gonna get a hurt real bad". The amount of serious physical injury inflicted to perp, is inversely proportional to the amount of time taken to inflict said injury when the number of perps increase. "What?, oh, sorry, what I meant to say was, I'm gonna hurt someone real bad real quick if his dipshit partner decides to wade in and take his ass whippin' too. and 4.) When dipshit came out of the back of that pick up with the shovel, in the immortal words of LAPDO'Shea "Front sight pressssssssssssss!" "Deep breath". O.K. that's my buck and a half, for what it's worth. I gotta go. I need to return Odin's soap box.

Someday, someone may kill you with your own gun, but they should have to beat you to death with it because it is empty.

I agree with Kevin812. I thought for certain the officer was in bad trouble when the passenger came around the vehicle undetected! I am so glad it ended differently.

Not only did he do all of those things wrong, but he went in with the mindset of arguing with the subjects. If you go in with the mindset of fighting, you will end up fighting and have the possibility of injury or worse.

If this officer had began nicely and calmly with backup en route, this would have been a different turn out.
