how do i become a detective without being an officer first? i have a b.s. degree in criminal justice& i've been to the police academy. it's my dream to become a detective. i would like to deal with homicide victims. i have a g.e.d. from my home town in kentucky. i got my g.e.d at the age of 14 my judges orders. i was into the forensic field for 9 months but i would like to just be a detective. i'm going next year for my masters degree in criminal justice. i have a forensic scientist diploma, and i have also gotten a private detective diploma. but i don't think that all of this is good enough. my step- dad is the sheriff of grant county kentucky but won't help me out. any advice is good advice.

Either have your dad run for sheriff or accept that you are going to have to take crash reports in the rain for some years and work your way up through the ranks.  I have been at this for 15 years and every year it just blows my mind how many people get into this profession and think they are 'entitled.'  I would have grave doubts about both your college and police academy if they told you any different.

I also have a B.S. in Criminal Justice and I work with people with Masters Degrees but the smartest person in the building at any given time is the one with the most time on the street, not the classroom.

In Iowa you can apply for the Division of Criminal Investigations (DCI). They are the equivalent of a detective at the state level. They aide smaller departments in the state with investigations, investigate officer involved shootings, enforce laws at casinos statewide, and perform other detective work. They mostly assist other agencies state wide with investigations. You can get on DCI without having to do any time in patrol. Here is the DCI website, http://www.dps.state.ia.us/DCI/index.shtml . There is also the Fire Marshalls Office for the State and Narcotics Office for the state that you can join without being in patrol first. Here is the DPS website for the State of Iowa to look through. I don't know what it is like for other states, but perhaps a little digging will turn up something you are interested in, http://www.dps.state.ia.us/ . Good luck.

You don't, you become a private investigator. You don't walk right into a detective job anywhere ever. You do your time in the trenches like everyone else and show that you are capable of holding a detective slot when you have attained the appropriate amount of seniority. This is not an overnight fix type of job. I don't care how much college you have you are not yet capable of basic crime scene investigating.

On the bright side, they don't file too many Officer Complaints when you don't find their killers.

Sounds like another person that woke up and started the day with a big bowl of stupid, sprinkled with powdered dumb ass, for breakfast.

Vince I do believe you are supposed to introduce yourself first. This is your first post, and its a question that people are calling you out on.

Vincent,

I would like to thank you. I always regretted not getting a college education until I read your post. I really didn't miss much, did I? By the way, you may have to take a lie detector test in your quest to join CSI. Maybe you should consider becoming a fireman?

What kills me is that he posts a question and then doesn't hang around to answer, just starts a new thread.  I promised SARGE I would be nicer and I'm really trying, but it's getting harder each day.
