Hey Fellow K9 Handlers,

I have a new GSD partner, not yet 2 years old. This is the first GSD I've ever had and by far the largest dog I've ever had.

I need to obtain a better watering system. My GSD and Rotty (recently retired partner)  live inside the house me. For the time being, I have one of those three piece water bowl sets that has proven to be ineffective. I have placed a water heater drain pan underneath their bowl but the GSD takes on so much water at a time he still slops it all over the place.

I have checked out the K9 mags with negative results. Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks y'all

Robin

There is a device that attaches to a spigot, the dog drinks from it. There are also bottles similar to you would put in a hamster cage. Or install a doggy door and put the water bucket on the back porch. (well if you have one.)

Yeah, I have the spigot thing.  Check out CostCo.com in the dog/pet section.  It was about $60 but it limits how FAST they can drink which was a big issue for one of mine.  My lab drank so much, so fast that he would turn around and throw it all up.  Now, the water only comes on when they get in front of the motion eye.  Turned out to be a life saver around my house.  Also keeps you from having to dump out cruddy water bowls with leaves, etc.

My GS is a slob when it comes to drinking also, I have accepted this from him as just the way he is. He thinks he has to drink from the bottom of the water pail.  Which is what I use I keep a 2 qt ss pail clipped inside his crate, fill it a few times a day, I have a 6 qt pail inside the patrol car, that is clipped to swing with the cars motion not as messy and only filled 1/2 way and when he is in his outside kennel there is a 8 qt pail clipped to the kennel for him.

Once I accepted that he is a slob it got easier to ignore the mess he would make and I wasnt cleaning up ofter him every few minutes.  It seems like when I quite doing that the messes from his water wern't as bad as I first thought.
