LaDET says ...

This is a letter my daughter sent to the President April  2001

She totally amazed me with her words and concern for Law Enforcement Members.

Dear President Bush

My name is _____ K___ and I am 10 years old. I am the daughter of a police detective and was wondering why doesn’t government recognize police as they do war veterans. I truly respect all war veterans of this country as well as all police in this country. I find it difficult that this country doesn’t provide medical services for the police in the same way it does our veterans. It would be nice for our country to respect the police the same way as it does our heros of all wars for this country. The police fight a daily war on our streets and many lose their lives or are injured in the line of duty. War is declared when our military fights for our country and nothing is ever declared when the police fight for our communities, cities and states. There are thousands of police who lost their lives fighting for the rights of our people.

Mr. President please help our police departments with providing a United States Law Enforcement Veterans Organization, which can provide medical assistance for our heros in this great country.

I am in no way comparing the veterans of war to the police, but I believe that the police are also veterans of war in our communities.

I don’t believe that there is much difference in the types of war that the police and veterans have fought and are still fighting, but the war on our streets will never end. The police will continue to fight for our wellbeing and our rights for protection against the criminals in this country.

I would be very pleased if you, Mr. President, would help our police with medical assistance in the same way as our great country does for our war heros.

Mr. President, my dad is a single parent who raises me and my 14 year old brother and works many of overtime hours to pay our bills and protects our Great State of Louisiana.

It would be nice if our country would show more respect for men and women that serve in our GREAT AMERICAN COUNTRY!

Sincerely

_____ K___

PS….PLEASE READ THIS LETTER AND THANK YOU

GOD BLESS THE USA

Excellent letter, well written and great flow. I will answer the question for the President of the United States.

Dear _______K____

I agree wiith you Miss K. Police, firefigthers and even EMTand Paramedics all deserve the same respect and care as our military personnel. If we were a typical Democracy form of government something could be done. However, we are a Republic and the US Constitution has built in walls between Fedreal and State autonomy rights. Each state would have to give up their sovergnty and several Constitutional Amendments would have to be passed in order forn the Federal Government to treat them equal to federal troops. Your letter should be sent to every State House in the Union to see if their legislatures and governors would give up their powers to make your request happen.

Your Truly & God Bless the USA

President GW B____

Very sincere and well written letter.  She should run for a political office, possibly a senator or house rep. seriously!

She is wise beyond her years! Tell her I said thank you from California Law Enforcement Officers. That was beautifully written, if I wasn't already the age that I am (which is old enough) I would think I would be working for her someday.

She reads the comments and  thanks everyone for their support.

She wants to become a politician and fight for the rights of Law Enforcement...When I read the letter I cried....She amazed me with her ability to  express in her own words the things that so many of us think of daily.....

What a great post! And, from a 10 year old, no doubt? Wow! This kid may be the first female President of the USA, if she so chooses. Although I voted for W...twice...frankly, I wouldn't hold my breath on him doing anything for any LEOs. This is especially true, considering how he has let two hard-working USPB agents (Ramos and Compean) continue to rot in prison, following their wrongful prosecution by a corrupt U.S. Attorney, and conviction by a brain-dead jury, merely because they were trying to do their jobs.

So yes, I agree medical care for hard-working LEOs. And, while we are at it, FREE Ramos and Compean!

Your daughter is not only very intelligent, but she must love her daddy very much to want to have him taken care of in case of injury. Smart girl I know you are very proud of her. I would like to hear what the President's response was when and if she gets one.

Brilliant.

Sensitive.

Patriotic.

Ma-'n'-Pa inspired. (e.g., a reflexction of her upbringing)

I trust that you have shared this outpouring of respect for her effort with your daughter.

That is an excellent letter and she hits several good points.  i hope that it starts a little fire up there in DC.  The national recognisition that all officers deserve is long overdo.  It is nice to have the Police Memorial, it is an awsome site and quite beatiful, the national police museum, incomplete, but looks to be top quality.  The National Law Enforcement week events, and activities are first rate. The are all things to build upon.  We officers here in this counrty are  on the front lines every day or a guerrilla  war.  It is as violant and dangerous as any counter-insurgent war anywhere, both have rules of engaugement.  Tell her to keep up the good work.

You're daughter is very bright and intelligent for her age.  Being a single father must be tough, I don't even know how I managed to achieve anything when I was a single mother.  You're obviously doing a tremendous job.  You're children are lucky to have a great father like yourself.
