Posted almost 5 years ago Do any of yall actually like 3rds? My dad is on 3rds and hates it. I've rode with him on 3rds alot, and from what I can tell, its kinda cool. But keep in my this is coming from a guy who don't go on 3rd shift patrol every night of a tour like yall do. Even still I don't really like having to get up at 2 or 3 in the day. I think I'll be more of a 2nd/split shift kind of a guy, but that don't mean I won't be stuck on thirds for 10 years lol. But either way I've got my share of 3rds coming my way. So what's yall's insight on the matter? |

| Posted almost 5 years ago former LEO: I hope you guys don't mind me posting here. There are many reasons for people to work third shift so depending on your reasoning goes to wheather you like it or not. There are people that just can't sleep at night so, third shirt is good for them. As Lt120 said Admin goes home and gives you the freedom to be a little more creative in your job. Bow109 states the moonbats come out at night which is true. This is usually when you get the DUIs, domestics, and ect... The day shift handles complaints from the citizens about things missing from last night and children not listening. As for me I enjoyed the night shift for the reasons I just posted and many others but, as for now I work it because that leaves an adult home at all time for my children. Oh! I don't change my sleep schedule. My wife and I time activities when we are both awake. |

| Posted almost 5 years ago There are a few things I really appreciate about 3rd shift police work 1) No admin. 2) I can get where the hell I'm going 3) and most importantly, NO Waste-of-my-time calls. I don't get the somebody-broke-into-my-shed-two-weeks-ago-and-I-thought-I-should-call complaints. No Grandma-passed-away-during-the-night calls and very few can-you-raise-my-kids calls. Unless it's something thaat wakes them up, people usually don't call. On the other hand, you do get to meet a lot of mentals, truck drivers and addicts and the occassional truck driving mental addict! Its great fun!! 100 Years from now ..... all new people !! |

| Posted almost 5 years ago nights is great, you have more ability to choose how your shift goes. You can do gthe minimum or you can look for things to keep you busy without your administration micro-managing your every move. Plus we get a dollar shift differential for being on nights! While you sleep soundly at night I risk my life to make sure you never wake! |

| Posted almost 5 years ago T'is good, we start at 1800hrs & go to 0600hrs. There's no Management and the critters (prisoners) are locked down by 1830hrs & if you got a good Supervisor & crew its a piece a cake!!!!! |

| Posted almost 5 years ago Nights are good. More time with the kids - I'd have none on 2nds. It's about 20 degrees cooler here at night, which beats 98 degrees every time. Fewer, but better calls...and you don't have to wave to every one you drive by. In foot pursuits you can track the suspect by following the barking dogs. They're ready for someone. They're not ready for US. |

| Posted almost 5 years ago We work 12s, and I only like the night shift. If I could have straight nights, I'd go full time tomorrow. Day shift has too many people in the office looking over your shoulder, it is 20 degrees hotter, it just isn't as much fun... |

| Posted almost 5 years ago I guess I suffer from Multiple Personality Disorder....My mind tells me night shift is great for all the reasons listed in this post. My Body on the other hand tries to tell my mind that nights are for sleeping, not days. I tried staying up until afternoon and then laying down, but my body threatened to completely shut down if I didn't go to bed. I go to bed early, and because of all the coffee I drank to stay awake all night, after 3-4 hours of sleep I have to get up, my body tells my mind it's daylight, you're supposed to be awake now, so there goes any more sleep. When shift work time rolled around, my minds says YEAH! lets go, but my body says noooo it's almost bedtime. There is a cure for this I found.....RETIREMENT! Now, clocks don't matter, calendars don't matter, don't get called out, don't have to stay up all night, unless I want to, and if by chance I do, my body no longer protests when I sneak in a Nap or two daily. Support bacteria. They're the only culture some people have. |

| Posted almost 5 years ago I found the worlds darkest RV window tint and a set of 90 pound double lined draps that turn my bedroom into a crypt. No light. I have a floor fan that "tunes out" the day noise too. Those two things had the largest impact on my ability and eventual willingness to work and stay on the midnight shift. I started pulling back on the coffee around three or four in the morning and have had only minor problems falling flat on my face after work. The only things that upsets the mix are prep work on the new house I just bought so I can move into it, and call outs. Since that rotates I am not always on the bubble and in the end I don't lose too much sleep. Once we go to a 12 hour schedule during the RNC I may have to do some adjusting, but even that is only until the convention is over. Happiness is a belt fed weapon.

| Posted almost 5 years ago It was great fun for 2 years.......... now, that I am not on it I would never go back, but on the nights where I get called out, or we are working a dope deal late into the night, or night interdiction, I have great fun! So I get the best of both worlds! I am the head of my depts Narcotics team, so I get to set hours! We have 8 guys on our team 4 uniformed 4 investigators... I make up the shifts for the Narc's and right now we are on seconds, but with dope work.... we work when then dopers do so....... We mainly do days and mids....... but I still get to play on nights...... But God I am happy knowing I can come off then when I want! |

| Posted almost 5 years ago I would rather do 3rds that any others shift. Even though my agency has the security contract with the local hospital, Which means you rotate through a shift up there every week. its really not bad if you need to catch up on reports. Romans 13:4 "For he is God's minister to you for good. But if you do evil, be afraid; for he is God's minister, an avenger to execute wrath on him who practices evil

| Posted almost 5 years ago Well I think I'd do pretty well on 3rds for a while. I'm a major night owl. Almost all of the times that I've gone with my dad on 3rds were enjoyable. Its cool staying up all night but I don't much care for staying in bed till 2 or 3 oclock in the day. |

| Posted almost 5 years ago Perks of mids. 1: Less traffic. 2: Cooler during the summer. 3: Less Brass. 4: Less Brass. 5: Don't have to play politics with mayors and such. 6: Court (automatic overtime for us) Cons of mids. 1: lack of sleep. 2: miss out on alot of daytime fun. 3: court time cuts into sleep time. 4: biggest con (can screw up family time) |
