I own & hate a lapel mike. Those curly cords always snag on something or if you run it under your shirt, aggrivate you to death!  Prefer nylon gear to leather becaue it don't creak, giving my position away, require constant maintainance and cost a fortune.

Own a Kenwood & Vertex hand-held (UHF), old Midland & Maxon mobile radios because they are tough as the rest, cheaper by 1/2 price and seem to just work.

Like P95 Ruger DC in 9mm because the gun works as good as a Glock (I love the G19 though & consider it best/most accurate), clips are about $13 for Hi-caps and lightweight with all corners rounded off-good for concealed carry off-duty. 1911 style .45 pistols...they just work.

Magnum boots (they're like sneakers that's indestructable), usually the cheap Response brand. www.qmuniforms.com has great prices on gear (about 1/2 price of Galls and even on some of same equipment).

Gerber Ez-Out Serrated or S&W Extreme Ops Urban Tanto point knife & don't ever leave without my Swiss Army Wenger pocket knife.

LED flashlight, Mini-mag light and 3-cell Mag-Light with Surefire 8AX Commander rechargable lights.

Fox 40 whistle. S&W cuffs. 2nd Chance vests. Regular old t-shirt for underneath in black.

Zebra F-402 ink pen (heavy, so you know if you drop it, stainless steel, writes forever, capable of being shoved through a piece of plywood probably & cost $5). Thin-box AL clipboard.

Biggest problem around here seems to be phones/service providers. Verizon & US Cellular are best in this rural area. Audiovox is worst I ever encountered. Dropped one once and it turned red, went to emergency mode & called 911...had to return it.  Nokia toughest. LG flips work ok. Motorola picks up ok. Probably switch to a Blackberry 8330 though...any thought?

What do you like or hate about your gear. If you don't have money to waste, this might help a lot of people.  LEO please help. I know there are many years of service here...what has lasted/survived the best???    Thanks, Rick, TN

When you figure out which one is a clip and which one is a magazine I'll reply to your response...

Too many youngsters get their hands on firearms without proper supervision. Keep your guns secure from ALL unauthorized persons! Lets stop burying children - PLEASE (jal.fast@yahoo.com)

Sorry, too many double shifts and not enough coffee. I wouldn't try to cram a stipper clip in a handgun...honest. Used plenty of them in SKS rifles though. They still suck, but they work.  Just prefer Mag-fed guns (semi-automatic hand-held firearms that require double-stack magazines)  over revolvers. S&W Model 66 .357 and Ruger SP101 are g2g with me though. 1st duty gun was a Model 66 with those big checkered grips. After 300rnds on a qualification course of full-load .357, my hand was nearly hamburger. Man those grips really did grip!  It's really hard to perfect a native born hillbilly. Honestly, I am trying though. Sometimes I can count higher than 20 without taking off my shoes. Please excuse my ignoramus maximus (dumb ass).

lol, you are forgiven my son...

Now as for the gear thingy, I worked patrol for security so I LOVE the lapel mikes, you just got to know how to wear it!

Also Love: ASP Batons, First Defense Pepper Spray, Springfield XDs, Glocks, Germ-X Hand sanitizer, Galls Ballistic Vests (very innexpensive for the protection!), Danner Boots, Bluetooth Headsets, Galls' Metal Clipboards, AMP Energy Drink, Maximum Strength Excedrine, Federal Hydrashocks, Galls Duty Bag, Hatch Patrolman Gloves...that's all I can think of for now.

I hate: cheap radio batteries, wearing a clip-on tie with short-sleeve uniforms (if it looks stupid it probably is!), Chevy Cavaliers (did you know they take a specific type of coolant and will overheat on a whim?), THOSE ANOYING TOUCH PROBES! ( http://www.touchprobe.com/ ), supervisors that look worse in a uniform than you do, and stupid sleeping guards that wonder why their site got vandalized and they got fired- then YOU get the lecture for it! (I know, not a gear thingy- but needed to be said).

Thank you. I've been through the gear section on this site & added some, but it's pretty extensive. I'm guessing that I should have called this section "What fails, What's a piece of junk not to buy & Why or how did it fail".  Know it's a strange topic, but I've bought stuff that just shouldn't be sold and would rather that nobody else have that problem. Ex: Bought a pair of Bates Enforcer boots few years ago. They are "junk", hurt your feet, rub your shins (chafe unless tucked in pants) and about as comfortable as cement blocks. Cheap Hi-Tec Magnum Response boots are much better. I'll try to come up with a list of junk "not to buy" & add that. Appreciate the input as SG are limited to what they can afford most of the time and this goes a "LONG WAY" toward helping out.  Much appreciated.   Rick

I heart Surefire flashlights! By far the most impressive piece of equipment I own - every time I turn it on I'm amazed by how bright it is for its size. It makes me feel like a god to shine it across a parking lot and have it light up stuff that far away. I'm currently seeking psychiatric help for this :P

I HATE neckties,I do not see any use for neckties,They do not look good and I already informed my wife,If I die, And you put me in a tie, I will get up and stick it up your nose! I love communications-gear. As a security officer,I will sometimes work un-armed, But I ALWAYS have my cell-phone,And will not go 10-8 without a radio.

I'm cheap and go with nylon.  It's lighter then leather and works just as good.  Have a couple pairs of ASP cuffs, lil bit more spendy then my old S&W model 100 but who cares, i like the 'oh, are your handcuffs real?'.  I'm asked that 20 times a day i swear it!  My usual response is 'Do something stupid and you'll find out!'  Usually makes them give me one of those don't mess with that guy looks.  Love it.

Own a Rayovac LED light.  Lighter then a 2 D-cell Maglite and just as reliable.  Put it thru as much abuse as my ASP baton and she's still kickin out 130 lumens of eye scorching light.  Freeze+P Pepper spray because it has Oleoresin Capsicum(OC) and Orthoclorobenzalmalonitril(CS)...wow i can't believe i remembered how to spell that...I'M A GENIOUS!!!!  Bow down to me simpletons for I am your new GOD!!!!

Ok back on topic.  I like 5.11 tactical boots or magnumlite.  Both are easy on the pocket book and will last for years.  Stay away from the 8" boots cuz they can wreak havoc so i tend to stick with the sneaker models or 6" boots.  I'm done...bye.

Left one is a clip, right is a magazine.  Do I get a cookie?  :)

Nice one!  most of the younger people on here won't even recognize the rifle (could be Garand, SKS, or a myriad of others) stripper clip on the left. The piece sesponsable for the nice give you away that you are out of ammo "pting" sound at the end of the magazine (on the right).

But hey, who am I to judge someone on lack of tolerance on slang terminology.
