Is the LoJack system as good as the advertisements for it would have one to believe?

That's too much like intelligence.

we dont have the tracking capability far as i know....but i have heard that it is pretty good from some other friends....i was reading up on it and i think that any add in recovering a stolen vehicle would be a useful tool. JMO

We had it at my old department and it was a great tool.  It was in our traffic safety car which I used almost everyday and we recovered several stolen cars both in our town and even in towns around us.  The Atllantic City area especially with the casino garages have a high vehicle theft problem and Lojack proved to be a great asset.  Being on an island it would even pick up the signal from over large bodies of water such as our back bay areas.  I miss having it as we don't have one at my current PD but yes I would recommend it especially in newer or higher end vehicles.  You can check out their website which gives a lot of good information about the system.  I liked it so much that when I went through class to get certified as police instructor I used the Lojack system as one of my presentations for my M.O.I. cert.

Works well, the only problem is you tend to need more than one police car with the system to really be able to accurately pinpoint the location of the vehicle.  And if it's moving the signal will get away from you a lot of the time

Only if the departments in the area use it. Our department got rid of it because we felt we were working for a private enterprise. Also since we are so close together around here we were getting his from  surrounding towns as well as New York City. It's better to install anti-theft devices to prevent the theft. LoJack is only good AFTER your car is stolen. GMAC offers a recovery system in many of their vehicles. If you park  your car at midnight and go to bed, get up a 6 and find your car missing by the time the you report it, the system is activated and if they police have tracking capability, you my get back the part of the car LoJack installed their device in. Just my opinion.

The Troopers in our larger cities have them and I know they are making quite a few recoveries. Our airplanes also have them and it picked up a stolen car northbound on I-75 during a speed detail, made for a pretty fun detail that day. They won't put up the towers here in north Florida so we can get the recovery units in our patrol cars. I have been begging LoJack for years for the towers because we have two major interstates that run through our district.

IS IT MORE EXPENSIVE TO HAVE THIS DEVICE INSTALLED AT ONES OWN DEALERSHIP OR IS IT A BETTER IDEA TO

GO TO A PARTICULAR TYPE OF CAR REPAIR GARAGE??

I researched it, and it sounded good, but it can not be moved from 1 vehicle to another, so if I lease, I would have to buy new Jo lack every 3 years

Yesterday was a pretty good show of LoJack yesterday and why I wouldn't buy it for a motorcycle.  We had a motorcycle stolen yesterday, and LoJack calle dand said they activated the system.  Well we attempted to locate the signal and could not, and 5 hours later the next shift found the LoJack, which had been ripped off of the bike within a block of where we were searching for the "Active" LoJack.

No point in having it if it can be removed so easily!

We have 4 of the systems installed in our fleet.  They seem to work well we have had a couple of hits so far--but Lojack as a whole is new to this area.  So far it has been ok.

If you have the $$ for the system, yes. It runs about $500-$700 L/E may get a discount and you also get a few bucks discount on your insurance not much. Now if you own a Cobra Saleen most definitely, a mini van no.

I recover many more using Onstar than Lojack. I think Onstar is starting to branch out beyond GM products.

My agency currently has 20 vehicles in fleet equipped with LOJACK and one in our helicopter. In our area the system works great. I have recovered several stolen vehicles and heavy equipment with this system. In the 10 years I have been using it, I can count on one hand the number of them I didn't find. Excellent tool for all agencies if you are experiencing alot of thefts. The great thing is that LOJACK will give the tracking units to your agency free and install them in your cruisers. That is if your area and consumers request them. We have several dealerships here that put them in all their vehicles which keeps us busy!
