I was reading the Marine Corps Times this week, and an article in the paper caught my attention, it shows a black Marine, who was unable to swim before joining the Marine Corps, listening to his Drill Instructor telling him "That if he quits now, he will always quit . . . go for it" and then he jumps in. Gawker.Com which is one of the web's biggest blog websites stated that the idea of this video was;

"Hey, black people. We know you can't swim. That's okay! We'll teach you how, and then let you ride in a cool boat, if you just sign up for the Marines now"

My take on it is, the idea is, that if you put your mind on a set goal, that you have nothing to fear in knowing that you will accomplish it at some point, today, tomorrow, next week or even a year down the road,

Any ideas, toughts, concerns?

If they used a white male they would complain that the minorities are not being properly represented in the commercials.

I saw that ad on TV and never thought anything other than "Why would a guy who can't swim join the Marines??"

I remember standing on a high school football field in Miami, Florida. It was hotter than hell.  There were guys all around me.  Some were white.  Some were black.  Some were latino.  Some were in better shape than me.  Some weren't.  Some could play ball.  Some couldn't.  Our coach told us the same thing as the DI says in the commercial.  None of us quit.  All of us went on to do good things with our lives.  The point is not the skin color of the one hearing the message, but the eternal truthfullness of the message itself.

I have heard that a marine is the same as a soldier when it comes to color. All are green some are just a darker shade of green

For a long time, the Marine Corps had terms such as:

"Light Green" . . . "Dark Green" . . . "Female Marine"

These terms have since been getting pushed away from newer Marines, but alot will still refer to females as "Female Marine".

However we still get Marines who have family roots with racist ideals and such and will refuse to live in the same room with them, etc . . . but quite frankly, I dont give two hoots if your white, black, yellow, green, purple or polkadot . . . if your in the fighting hole with me, shooting down range and I know that if a person came over the top you would stick em' before they got . . . thats all I care about.

Having spent more than 21 years in the Corps I would say that all Marines are green. Who the heck cares what color skin  the man next to you in the fox hole has. I just always made sure we had the same blood type. A Marine is a Marine. Not dark green or light green but Marine Corps Green. Racist  because you can't swim, sorry A.H. but it's a requirement to graduate Marine Corps Boot Camp so does that answer your question?

Mostly in basic but I had issues after returning from Nam and being at Fort Eustis. I seemed to me that they singled out the Nam vets for all the shit jobs. It wouldn't have been so bad if it wasn't for the fact the the ones breaking balls never were there.

I don't know, I know that MP's are usually segragated because of our job and we can only be around each other, because we know damn well that anyone who gets the chance will hit us with a beer bottle. But its been good so far, not intentions of re-enlisting at the moment, but its so far - so good.

These words are as true as they get. It is usually those who are racists and bigots that yell the loudest at any possible slight. I see nothing racist about it. There are lots of white males that can't swim either. I saw that while in the Navy no less! I think we had a half dozen in my company that couldn't swim or better than 10%!

I've dealt with this issue personally, and in both positive and negative light.

All the black guys I work with in the .mil seem to enjoy going on about how blacks in general can't swim, and go out of their way to tell their near drowning stories in order to get some laughs.  When asked, they say it's a cultural thing with several underlying causes, not the least of which is the lack of access to swimming pools and lessons in generally less economically endowed communities.   What I don't hear is excuses, as all of these guys had to pass the same swim test as I did in order to be there.

One exception was when I was in a rather lenghty Army school and a Captian (former enlisted) started going on about how that particular school is racist because it required black soldiers to pass a swim test, just as it was required of everyone else.  He had failed the test the first time and had to reapply to the school.  This floored me and I pointed out the obvious, as there were several readily identifiable black soldiers (including himself) who had obviously passed the test and were right there with us.

He responded that "everybody knows" that black people can't swim.  I pointed out that the best swimmer in our class was black (he failed out of BUDS, but not for swimming) and that the Captain in question had the wherewithall to use the Army to get a college education and become a commissioned officer, but couldn't be troubled to use the FREE swim lessons provided on post in order to prepare for a swim test that he knew he would have to take upon arival, as it was not a secret and was often addressed as a requirement needing special attention by prospective attendees of the school.

Needless to say, he did not go out of his way to aid me in my peer evaluations.  Thankfully, he was identified and removed from the course within a few weeks.

Referencing the above, I suppose the video might have been indirectly addressing potential black enlistees by presenting a culturally recognized challenge without necessarily excluding anyone else from the message.  Or maybe it was just an accident of fate that the guy was black.  It doesn't concern me either way.

Thats what my buddy who was in the Marines told me. He said that when referring to another Marine (when they needed a descriptor and the name was unknown) they'd say "The dark green Marine over there" or "The light Green Marine". He said that gender was the same. They were all Marines and nobody referred to race or gender in any other way.

It's not going to do anyone any good to hide behind skin color based tired old stereotypes when there are military standards to be met. Gunnery Sgt. Hartman summed it up best "Here you are all equally worthless!" LEARN TO SWIM IF YOU CAN'T SWIM. Hey... I had a hard time with running. I had to literally learn how to run in such a way as to not exhaust myself in the first five minutes while still making good time. I NEVER JUST QUIT. Or whined "Hey I'm white and I never played basketball" That would have been probably the lamest thing ever.

You have trouble with something? Keep working on it until you've fixed it. Don't expect everyone else to lower their standards just on your account. if you don't know how to swim yet you joined the Corps (Or the Navy for that matter) you had better expect they will keep sending your azz to the pool until you've proven you can indeed swim. if you don't like it well that's just tuff shit.

P.S. I have been able to swim like a pollywog since birth yet I was swallowing alot of water in the Battle Stations thing. I was upset but it didn't kill me.

My thoughts on this, having also seen video, was that the Marines were just saying to prospective recruits, "It doesn't matter what your fears may be, we can help you overcome them, and help make you into a tough Marine." In the ad, I think I remember seeing a Seal-type boat come by, picking up a swimmer along the way. I know in water training in the Navy.....and probably every other armed forces branch......that's the way it is. Those you swim with are to be considered partners, swim buddies, a cohesive unit, always looking out for each other, etc.. The ad could've had a person of hispanic, asian, caribbean, native american, etc. obvious heritage and I still would think the same thing. I didn't take it as a slam, or racist thing, against blacks. Stereotypes need to be forgotten. Some people are just way too sensitive, or are always looking for a fight.  P.S. My father is a former Marine, and he says 'Marine is green.....and nothing else.' People, please quit whining.

Yet another example of how our society has to be equal and fair in everything we do. No one can be better and no one can be worse. We can't have cahampions in Little League anymore in some places because the kids might hink they aren't good enough, well guess what, as a team they probably wheren't. What we need is people to stand up to all this PC garbage and say enough is enough. Some people win and somelose and thye all have to deal with what they have done. This Marine couldn't swim, he was being motivated by his DI. He probably knew he couldn't swim and was looking for a reason to try. he found it in the Corps. I agree those folks over at gawker need to shut up. I can't swim so I didn't even consider the Navy, but I did consider the Corps. Went into the AF instead, it just happens. People need to pick a branch for the right reasons not the wrong ones.

Problem is that reporters give people like that recognition by printing that crap just allowing it to become an issue.....anyone with common sense knows that the commercial is in no way racist, but someone will always look to take advantage of a situation.

There are idiots out there whose entire purpose for existing is to find racism, sexism, or some other sort of "ism" in everything and anything.....these "Politically Correct" morons need to get a life and leave the rest of the world alone.  The scenario you are talking about concerns training a young man (regardless of color, ethnicity, religion, etc) to become a United States Marine.  The Corps is based upon motivation, commitment, self-reliance, and a never-say-die attitude.  We all have those things in our lives that we think are insurmountable, until the right motivator (usually a Sergeant) puts us in the "can-do" state of mind and gets us past our fears and doubts. As for the "ism-idiots", they can find better ways to spend their waking hours.
