So how much has your language (mainly cursing) changed since you've been in the business? Before I was an officer, I didn't curse half as much as I do now. I don't know if it's being around other officers, the stress, or seeing some crappy things, but my language has definitely changed.

1st year.........same from military (not good)
3rd year..........little worse
5th year........cooled off a little after being promoted
8th year........funny you bring this up.......told a few of my officer buddies if they hear me "cuss" to punch me... keeps the self-defense training up to par too:)

But yes the job does get to ya and change you........hard to explain, but you definitely know what I'm talking about...

My first year in the Air Force I remember writing home about how incredibly foul mouthed the people were. I was incredibly innocent then. By the time I had been in a year or so, young airmen were writing home about how foul mouthed I was. I toned down somewhat when my first child was born and then even more when I got into civillian policing. Depending on whose company I was in, I could still get pretty wound up though.

For the past seven years I've worked at a Christian University and have had to pretty much cut it all out of my vocabulary. I've learned that I can still deal with hard-heads, chase and fight the bad-guy and put the felon in jail without uttering a single obscinity. It is amazing what time, place and a few years of experience and wisdom can do for a guy!

I'm as hard-headed, stiff-necked and cynical as any cop you'll meet, but I've found that good language skills (in most situations) make the job a lot easier. Getting down and dirty so to speak has its place on rare occasion but by far and away it's the high road for this good ol' boy.

As a civilian that is around cops all the time, even my language has changed. I feed the on duty guys for Thanksgiving and one year my parents were there. I had them all prepared for cuss words and not a damn or a hell out of their mouths...my Mom wanted to know why I swear and they don't:-). As I've gotten older I too have toned my language down, The funny part is that the guys have accepted me so much that they will swear around me and apologize when they first meet me and then tell the new guys when they have been around that it's okay to not worry about offending me since I'm one of them.

When I was a kid-- say, college-aged-- I got a little foul-mouthed. Then one day it occurred to me that the folks whose style I most admired didn't use "language" at all and yet were still able to express themselves perfectly well. That was a turning point for me, and I started cleaning up my language.

Just as well, because then I became a clergy person, and people expected me to abide by a higher standard.

When I first started working with cops, they were a little careful around me, and apologetic if they slipped. But they eventually figured out I didn't really care about it-- it's not that language shocks me, it's just that I prefer not to use it myself.

Once they figured out I didn't really care one way or the other, they started playing tricks on other cops when I was riding along. They'd lure some poor guy into "displaying his colors", so to speak, and then say something like, "Real nice way to talk in front of a chaplain!" and the guy would like to die of embarassment. LOL I'd tell him, "That's okay, officer, I'm bound by confidentiality-- I can't tell anyone what you said anyway!"

:-D

I learned to swear from all the paratroopers that would hang out at my house in the early 70's. My dad was the 1st Sgt. at one of the companies with the 82nd AA. My mom was also a NCO in the 82nd at the hospitable.

I guess that my mouth has gotten less active as I got older, more of a thinker and man of fewer four letter words these days,:)

I agree with ChaplainKeppy. The folks we admire do not need to use a limited four letter word vocabulary. The ethical, thinking law enforcers have learned to take the high road and be successful (and even more so) without using a "potty mouth." It looks ridiculous to see a professional try to act a dude in the 'hood. What separates us from them (criminals) is not the badge; what separates us is how we conduct ourselves.

I swear less now. My patner does enough swearing for the both of us. But I do see a need some times to curse a person out on the streets. You can't always ask a person, "Please be quiet sir, you're disturbing the peace." A good, "Shut the hell up or you're ass is going to jail" works well. And I never get verbal beafs.

You should do what gone does every time your partner swears either punch him or make him pay you money $5.00 for the a and d word $10.00 for the s and b word $20.00 for the f and Ba word. try it out I'll bet with in the first month he'll tune down his language.

ODIN....Your a trip...My language has gotten worst over the years. I seem to use the "F" word a lot more. Its the most widely understood word in our area regardless of your nationality. "You done F***** up now!!" It's a universal phrase for, Your ass is going to jail with me right now and don't make me whip your ass on the way.

Police officers curse....really....no f***%cking way! I have never cursed...lol! "Sir...if you don't shut the hell up you just may get your f*c*in' ass whooped if you threatem me again!" You need to use that type of "verbal judo" so the assbag can understand. Speak to where they can understand you. If it takes "hand movements"...lol, do it!!

Back to the topic!

When I started with the Sheriff I had a mouth but after working with them for about a year and a half it got worst. I remember when my mother told me "you sure like that f word don’t you" was when I started to pay attention to what I was saying... After we where transferred to our new PD I cut back, but then I noticed my MOTHER using it… I do us it a lot and try not to use it around my kids as one day we where driving and someone cut me off and in the back I hear “you stupid fucking asshole” from my 4 year old at the time.... LOL SOOOO that was a big enough reason to stop and if not stop to cut back…

some things just dont make since to me .. like washing your hands after you pee. stop pissing on your hands, i havent pissed on my hands since i was 30 ,..besides your hands touch more filthy things in a days time than your privates,.. so you need to wash them before you touch yourself.
