Sometimes it is the parent, and sometimes it is just an unexpalinable fear. For instance, who liked Seseme Street when they were a kid? Everyone but ME! Big bird scared the snot out of me. It was Big bird on ice or something. When you are three foot tall a six foot bird makes you feel guilty and a bit scared for how much you liked that chicken leg at dinner last night. lol

I was reading a lot of these replies and notice that I hear and think all the same ones that all of you have heard and thought of.  I competely agree with these and feel that anytime that a child is negatively effected by an action they remember that later.  It also can be a learned act from a parent of role model that has had negative contacts with LEO's and don't like reacting with us.  This type of behavior I try to change by atleast talking to the kid maybe even giving them a sticker badge or replica plastic badge.  I have even let them sit in my patrol vehicle to show them the inside.  Sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't.  Just my $.02

My big thing about kid being scared of cop has to do with the parents i cant tell you how many times i have been out to eat like after work or even on lunch and there happens to be kids there with their parents and they are yelling or doing something and the parents say " look there is a cop if you dont listen to me he will take you to jail" I think that is bullshit so i always have the remark back to the kids dont worry im not going to take you to jail. But i mean damn there is already enought bad stuff on tv and everyday life to give us enough problems but then you have the parents making there kids scared of us to

I have foster kids, you can imagine this brings a whole new challenge of fear of law personnel.  Soon enought the kids will forget what I do and slip up and use unacceptable terms for police officers.  I do believe it is programming and the more visibility we have in the community the more we can dispel the myths.  Now I can say that because I live in a small community, I have no misconception that this is not as easily done in large urban areas.  If we could promote the "good" stories that would help but let's face it the "bad" ones get the press.  It's an uphill battle, hope you ahve your hiking shoed on!!!

The world is not all sunshine and rainbows. It is a very mean and nasty place It will beat you to your knees and keep you there permanently if you let it. You, me or nobody is going to hit as hard as life. But it is not about how hard you hit, it is about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward,!

i have realized this is becoming a big problem.  I live in Anaheim CA, which you would all know about since its on the news right now because of the Anaheim Riots.  I am majoring in Criminal Justice which i am now working on my bachelors; i live in a low class neighborhood.  These children are not being scared of cops its just they are raised on not liking the police which i think this is sad.  Maybe there is corrupt police officers out there but doesn't mean they are all the same.  I grew up traumatized by cops due to my father who was a gang member/ drug dealer.  I have seen him get arrested, tackled as he resists by police officers.  I grew up scared of police officers; i remember i was around 8 years old walking back from school as i am almost home, and i see a police officer who doesn't even notice me because i was little kid just walking home, but he was doing his daily patrol as i remember being nervous and scared of the police even though i wasn't doing nothing wrong.  I have realized it has lot to do with the lack of community policing, kids need to know that the police officers are here to help.

Walking through my neighborhood and hearing parents awaring neighbors to tell their son to hide because the police are in the alleys shows me the people are more in the side of gang members than police officers.  I believe every city and town should have a strong support on Community policing.
