So, its like this. I'm F'ing nuts. No, seriously, according to my last psych exam I'm a loony.

Is there such a thing as being too truthful on the pre-hire psych exam? They ask the damndest questions, like:

"Do you like to tease animals?" Well yes, as a matter of fact I do! I tease my cat and puppies all the time! Does that make me a madman?

"Do you like fire?" Well, I don't play with matches or anything, but fire is nice...especially in my theoretical fireplace. Damn, now I'm a Pyromaniac.

"Have you ever lied to someone?" Nooooo! (dripping with sarcasm)

"Have you ever stolen anything?" (talk about a loaded question) Well, there was this one time I stole the pen from the drive up window at the bank! Wow, I was good! Oh, and I took a pack of gum from the store when I was about 9 years old. I think a part of my ass that my dad whooped off is still on the wall out there.

"Have you ever wanted to kill somebody?" Yes, on the way here some douche pulled out in front of me and almost made me late. I coulda done 'im in!

"Have you ever wanted to kill yourself?" Well, until now, no...but one more question like this and I just might!

So, fun aside, what the hell did I do wrong? I answered everything truthfully. There are some questions though that can't just be answered Yes or No without making you look like a nutty criminal or a square liar! Hell, I don't even know if I'm asking or venting anymore. Maybe I just need to stop liking fire and teasing animals. What I worry about is questions like "Have you ever stolen?" If I say "No" that would technically be a lie. If I say yes, that makes me look like a criminal. If I accidentally walk off with somebody's crappy Papermate pen, realize it, then don't take it back, then I stole it I guess. So, I get drilled with these questions, then will get the same sort of thing on the polygraph? This one was for Corrections, not LEO.

They are looking for the extremes. Emotionally the way to go is middle of the road, nothing gets you "HOT", nothing makes you indifferent. The thing is you can take the MMPR ten times, have it evaluated by ten different doctors, and get ten different opinions. It is not a test of honesty, it is a test of stability.

Doh sorry :)  Seriously though, those tests really ARE too subjective.  I was advised before I did mine (because I think I tend to ramble on sometimes!) not to say TOO much...of course, then they might think you are trying to hide something....but it worked for me (or so they lead me to believe....).  I tried a little humour with the Dr...ya don't do that either..apparently they have their sense of humour surgically removed at medical school.  And I agree with Taffy that they are looking for extremes, so accidently taking a pen or teasing your pets probably isn't what they're looking for....

What is it with those guys, seriously! They're like freakin undertakers or gravediggers! No, gravediggers at least drink sometimes. They're like blocks of wood, and if you crack a joke, they just look at you with no emotion and scribble in their notes! And who is crazy? lol I'll try for a more middle ground next time. I think thats what my buddy must have meant by not being TOO straight forward.

Like Taf said, a good pysch test will only give extremes. I personally don't think its a particularly good indicator whether someone will be a good cop or not. Especially given the last 5 candidates that "passed" our psych and then failed the field.

Awhile back, I took a pysch test for another agency, thinking about maybe transferring. The psych team failed me, telling me that I would do ok at first, but wouldn't be able to handle the call load. WHAT?! I take, by far, the most calls in my dept...and I'm bored half the time.

Obviously, I don't have a lot of confidence in them.

Only thing I can recommend...don't think too much about each question.

A friend of mine failed the psych evaluation for being to honest, he passed everything else. 8 years in the Marines and never a problem, honorable discharge. He is the type of man that the NYPD needs, instead of fighting the results he enlisted in the Army.

I agree that their sense of humor MUST be surgically removed. I just found out I failed my psych. The lady I was evalled by was so terse and off putting, almost tot eh point  of being rude. When asked if I ever stole anything she got pissy that I didn't include pens from work although I did include a pair of barbie shoes from my neighbor when I was 4 years old. Also teh finish the sentence questions of "What do yout hink most people think of white/black/asian/hispanic people", it's like "hell if I know what MOST people think, I know what I think" so I could only think of pop culture stereotypes,s he gave me death glare....
