I work for a major armored truck company in Montana.  When I was hired I thought it would be a great job because hauling money around just seemed fun.  But when I got into it I realized that it was a lot more work than I could have ever imagined.  The long hours, heaving lifting, traveling, low pay, and mangement that nad no idea what happens on the truck because they haven't been on the truck since they became management.  There are days when I put in 18 hours with no breaks including lunch.  Overtime starts after 50 hours and yes it is legal (unfortunatly).  And to top it off we are on call for ATMs all night with an hour responce time.  They seem to come in spurts and occur right about the time you are just having dinner or are about to go somewhere.  I was just curious what some of your impressions or misconceptions on what armor truck life is like.


Those that think they know everything annoy those of us that do.
It's nothing that some zip ties and alone time in the closet wont fix.

I also worked on a armored truck for a short time and also had the same beef jeff. I agree with almost everything you said and that was excataly what i experanced when i worked as a messanger ( long hours, low pay, Money is heavy I.E. Coke Cola plant and all there coins lol, hated feeling like i had a target on my back, etc, etc, etc) For me that was one of the worest jobs i ever worked and glad i dont do that any more.

Never worked on a truck, but way back in the day as a Rookie Cop, I did armed courier duties for a couple businesses as a contract job. Picked up for a couple Movie Houses 7 nights a week.
 
Was sort of fun, until I realized how easy it would be to shoot me in the face and make off with the loot…add to that I had no backup.
 
I would walk out with 60/80 K+ at a pop, drive to the night drop and make the deposit. All for 30 bucks each run; at about 120 a night for a few minutes work I did it for a few months but after the short time and reasons cited, I bailed.
 
As a Cop, I worked my share of Armored Truck robberies, most went badly for the guys making the pickups/deliveries. When it comes to a stickup on those, the Mopes usually come ready to rock. I admire anyone who will sit on a million bucks for the low wage and less than austere working conditions you face.
 
Be careful and go home at the end of your shift!

NEVER DONE IT. MY "CONCEPTIONS" ARE ITS VERY DANGEROUS AND YOU GUYS ARE WAY UNDER-PAID. I REMEMBER SOME HEISTS THAT WERE BASICALLY EXECUTIONS OF THE GUARD OR GUARDS. I HAVE AN ESTATE/ PEROSNAL PROTECTION GIG FOR ABOUT THE SAME MONEY PLUS HEALTH INSURANCE. IT IS MUCH MUCH SAFER UNLESS WE TRIP GOING OUT TO GET THE MAIL.


WATCH YOUR BACKS. MAYBE LOOK FOR  A NEW JOB.

Dangerous job, little pay.  I wouldn't do it unless wearing heavy armor & carrying superior firepower.  My 1st training in 1991, the commander of swat team was giving the class (something he does weekends for xtra $$$) and one armored car co. sent over about 3 people for the class. This is when Glocks became the new "thing" and instructor telling us how durable they were. Then proceeded to inspect our firearms on the desk for any flaws. A lady had been "issued" a revolver...think in .38.  When he picked it up and released the cylinder, it fell out in the floor. He went ballistic...stopped the class 15 minutes and chewed the hell out of her employers on the phone.  You guys need good equipment. Your lives depend on it and this was probably one of many such incidents that could get someone hurt. The bad guys are probably going to be carrying some mean equipment if they expect to knock over an armored car. Mostly heard the vulnerable point is when guard exits the car and they start moving the load. I've done several money drop escorts with only one incident that was strange, but armoured car SG deserve more credit that they are given.  Only question I always wondered about....what do you do if the air conditioning goes out in the truck???

I worked for Brinks for several years. The pay was $10 / Hr. and I worked 14 hour day's. Doing that six day's a week really burned me out and it was very hard work, especially when a bank orderes 5,000 pounds worth of coin that you have to bring through the front door on a hand cart with no partner to watch your back. The drivers are not allowed to exit the truck even if there is an emergency and the messanger get's ambushed. I wore several different hats for the company so to speak and never was given a raise. It's all about money with these people. They still call me to this day asking me if I would at least come back part time and my answer to them is alway's a simple one: NO!!!

AC never worked in the trucks I got assigned to. They were uncomfortable to ride in, and you're very sore by the end of the day. The pay was only 10.00/hr to start, the days were very long with no overtime. The trucks broke down frequently because they were not maintained well enough. If you're looking into it as a temporary job, not bad....but not a great career job.

I have had the AC go out several times and it was always a week of two before it got fixed.  So it makes a long had day that much more so.  Also craming three people into the front of the truck is very uncomfortable especially when you have 500 plus miles to go and 14-18 hour days.


Those that think they know everything annoy those of us that do.

OMG...down south it gets so hot you could fry like a bug on a hot skillet...that's just nuts.  Bet the windows don't roll down either. Thanks guys for helping keep our businesses running. THANKS TO ALL LEO FOR KEEPING US SAFE!!!!    (3 in the front?)  Around Tri-Cities, TN area always see 1 riding in rear as guard and 2 up front, as they're usually going from bank to bank (Ex: Wells or Brinks).  Have a lady friend that used to drive/service ATM's, etc for one company.  Said there were always weirdos around and you really had to be on the lookout. It was part-time and she swapped jobs for a full time now.  Saw her throw someone out of a building once, by the seat of the pants & shirt collar. Just stopped by 2 say hello & there was a big no parking X out front of the door. That guy flew out like Superman and landed right on it-splat.  He was cursing pretty good until he hit and it knocked the air out of him. Me & my buddy thought WTF...they must have a brawl or something??? She walked out pissed off & proceeded to give him the verbal right act as the LEO patrol (someone called the cops) showed up. Guy complained to the officer what happened & the officer laughed & told him he was lucky that was all that she'd done to him. Better never come back or I'll get mad too. Get up & get the f out of his town. That's the only flying man I've ever seen...LOL

You freaking roast. You were your damn vest and up with heat rash every night. Near the end they started giving me partners that didn't even know how to load the damn gun.


But the hundred thousand "hey buddy, you got any samples?" Really gets old, so now i respond with "Hell yea, With every bag of currency you get 15 rounds of ammo... Now would you like that in the Head, Torso, or Balls?"

hahah....that's pricess..."free samples."  If I had a penny for every time I heard that, I'd be able to retire right now. Heck no those windows didn't roll down, you sweat your tail off.  You always had to have eyes in the back of your head in that job, ya never knew when some nut would try to rob you, all for 10 bucks an hour and a partner who didn't always load his gun, let alone know which way the bullets went in, lol

Just wondering...do they recycle those trucks or what?   Some of them running around here look the same as they did when I was a kid and I'm 40 now.  Must rebuild the drivetrain and just put them back in service?  Saw once on a show where they were working on an emergency device you could push a button  and the whole back (from this pedastool in the middle of truck) would fill up with expandable foam that was fast setting, about 6" deep.  Within 30sec or so, that thing was filled aobut 2+feet high and sets just like the stuff you caulk around you door to seal the air gaps with...like hard foam.  Bad guy would be SOL. You'd have to cut the stuff out to get the payload removed. Bet the SG in the rear would be really P.O.'d as he'd be stuck too...from the knees down!  This was like the Discovery Channel or something on technology. They also had what looked like a grenade launcher that fired a "sticky net" that shot out, spread open and enveloped the bad guy. It wrapped him up like Spiderman...he could only wiggle around and the more he did, worse it got. Water releases it (call the FD guys!) to get him loose. Would be a good wheapon for the rear SG to deploy.  "Hey, is this the cops? We got a sticky glob of bad guys on 1st and 3rd street near the intersection. Yep, they're kind of tied together & you'll need the FD to get em loose, just hose them down. Don't touch it though or you'll be stuck too."  Dispatcher probably wouldn't believe you.

When I was in uniform nobody was allowed to touch me not even friends. But everbody would stop and stare when you would go by. It was like their dreams had left them on the side of the road.

I worked on an armored truck and i agree it was'nt what i expected . way to many hours and not enough pay !!! i one time woke up and had to be at work at 4:45 am and was a driver and i didnt get back to base until 11 oclock at night and didnt have to get home until 11:30 and had to wake up and do it over again !!!! it was unprodictable and i dont know i just like a set schedule !!

Its not uncommon to put in 18 hour days and 65-70 hour weeks.  in fact I would still be working those hours every week, except we now get overtime and they throw a fit if we get over 50 hours, which is when our overtime starts.

I'm currently working for an armored car co. so I can relate to everything that's been said so far.  My company has about a dozen revolvers available for officers who don't have their own weapon.  I got a look at one of them the other day:  it was rusted!  I found out no one knows how long it's been since any of them had been cleaned or how long the bullets have been left in any of them!  [They never unload them; they just put them back on the self!]  I also discovered that no one cared.  As far as the company is concerned a side arm is just a "prop" -- it's never to be used.  No wonder there are stories of officers carrying unloaded pistols to cut down on the weight, and officers carrying air pistols or replica nonfiring guns.


Of course there is no weapons training because we are not to use our weapon.  So where are the state regulations and oversight?  There is talk about establishing nation-wide state or federal standards for security offficers; what about the armored car industry?


Where's a union when you need one?....

I worked for Dunbar for a little over a year and a half. The only thing I liked about the company was you got to carry your own firearm, as long as it met company policy, ie. barrel length, double action only, etc. At the time I started working for them you start out part-time only, and you work full-time hours. I was pulling 50+ hours a week to start, and when I went to my supervisor to tell him to cut me back a little because i was getting burned out he dropped me to around 16 hours a week. They like to push you till your to tired to do anything and then they start to mess with you. Another thing was the equipment sucked. I had one partner who carried a company issued .38. Before we went out on our route she checked her weapon, and the cylinder was jammed. She told the guy in the vault her weapon was jammed, and he told her he didn't have another weapon to giver her. Then he told her you're running late for your route start time you need to go. What good is a partner with a nonfunctional weapon? None! Between the weapons, and the trucks breaking down all the time. I don't know what was worse. I'll tell you one thing though I will never work for them again.


I live in VA, here you have to be certified by DCJS to work in any facet of security, and if you carry a weapon in the perfomance of your duty you have to be qualified with that weapon. That includes OC spray, ASP, or firearms.
