June 2, 2008 - Site Problems Over the Weekend

As some of you unlikely noticed, some parts of PoliceLink were unaccessible or not completely working over the weekend. We were doing some behind-the-scenes work that caused the site to be inaccessible. Other than being down for short periods here and there, the only other side effect is that some member images / photographs uploaded may not have been stored.

If you noticed this with any images or photographs you attempted to upload to your profile or elsewhere on the site, the issue has now been fixed and you should be able now upload your photos with no problems.

June 29, 2008 - Recent events in PoliceLink forums

There has been a lot of misinformation provided in this and other posts regarding what has occured over the last few days.

First and foremost, no non-LEOs have been given preference to LEOs on PoliceLink. PoliceLink is obviously an LEO site and we've done everything we possibly can to ensure LEOs always will be the priority here. LEO verification, LEO-only groups, and similar featured are available. We have plans to offer an even broader area of LEO only access. We have a zero-tolerance policy on trolls and badge bunnies that will always be in force.

This most recent incident was the result of a misunderstanding within in the moderator crew that snowballed a bit before we could get a handle on it. As I said, no non-LEOs have been given preference to LEOs on PoliceLink. Unfortunately, an incident that should be been handled internally with the moderators was made public, with a lot of misinformation provided and important details left out.

The moderators who resigned did so under their own decisions. No one was asked to resign.

I urge everyone to not rush to conclusions with such fragmented and inaccurate information abound. Please hold fast and myself and TheSarge will provide additional information via the Bulletin Board in the near future.

We do want the discussions on PoliceLink to stay on focus with the intent of the site - unity within the law enforcement community. We will continue to stricly enforce the no trolls and no badge bunnies rules. All other rules and TOUs are still in effect. Please understand if any of the moderators lock and / or vault discussions threads that are rife with misinformation or are getting out of hand with accusations going back and forth.

In the meantime, instead of posting here in the discussions about this topic, I ask anyone with concerns to express them to myself and / or TheSarge. We will get back to you as soon as we possibly can.

-Chris

June 30, 2008 - Follow up on the recent moderator resignations

This is a joint posting from myself and TheSarge.

We, along with the mods, have heard from many PoliceLink members regarding recent events. We have also been closely following the various discussion threads and postings.

As mentioned in yesterday's Bulletin Board posting, some events and comments that usually would remain internal to the moderator group, were made public.

We see no need to compound the issues by releasing the internal moderator discussions that led up to this. The accurate part of what has occurred is that jroger received a temporary sanction for her actions and Nikkochey and RetiredCop have both resigned.

TheSarge and the moderator team will continue to effectively prohibit trolls and badge bunnies from infesting PoliceLink and will also continue to moderate the forums based on the TOU and Forum Rules.

A set of SOP's are being developed at this moment that will expand and clarify the current forum rules. The SOP's will act as a guideline for future actions. Much of what has been done in the past has been done with a sense of consensus. As we have developed beyond infancy, a set of guidelines in an SOP style will assist in future actions.

July 1, 2008 - Update on moderator resignations

As a follow-up to my previous postings, I wanted to let the community know that Rexbolo911 is also no longer a moderator.

Additionally, jroger's sanction is being modified to a permanent sanction.

I want to reiterate the information given in our previous postings that we are working hard on creating a well defined SOP to replace the current forum rules. We are also working hard on expanding our ability to offer more restricted LEO-only areas within the forums. Please bear with us though, as this will take a little time to do.

I will keep you posted with additional improvements to the forums and PoliceLink in general as they are made.

July 2, 2008 - Crackdown on inappropriate content

In a very short time PoliceLink has become the #1 site for LEOs to network, both professionally and personally. We encourage as much interaction as possible on both fronts. I would like to take a moment, however, to remind everyone of our appropriate use policy as defined in the Terms of Use, specifically item five of the TOU:

"You shall not upload, email, post or transmit to, or distribute or otherwise publish through the PoliceLink.com Web site any material which: is ... obscene, vulgar, offensive, harassing, hateful, embarrassing, pornographic, profane, sexually explicit, or indecent;"

In other words, PoliceLink is not a dating site and it never will be. PoliceLink editorial staff and moderators have been and will be continuing to remove, without notice, any posts, comments, and especially photos, that are sexually explicit or suggestive in nature. Gross violations of the TOU can result in an immediate sanctioning of an account.

Moderators will continue their aggressive sanctionings against badge bunnies (members who join specifically looking to flirt with police officers) and removal of inappropriate photographs and other content.

Let's continue working together to ensure PoliceLink stays a professional environment dedicated to promoting the law enforcement community.

July 3, 2008 - Introducing The Lobby

In our continued efforts to improve the PoliceLink discussion forums, we have replaced the old Ask a Cop with a new topic called The Lobby. All of the old discussions in Ask a Cop are now available in the Lobby.

We hope that re-defining what this topic is all about will help reduce the amount of trolls and anti-law enforcement types who occasionally show their heads. It also better defines the original intent of the topic - to create an area on PoliceLink where civilians and LEOs can engage in dialogue.

That said, the moderators will continue to heavily monitor all of the discussions with The Lobby and will quickly sanction any trolls, badge bunnies, or cop haters that appear.

We are also steaming ahead with some other changes over the coming weeks that should also greatly improve the forums.

July 11, 2008 Part 1 - New Features

Revamped Reputation Points

As many people had noticed, the old reputation point system wasn't exactly working exactly right. Many users experiencied issues when they lost or didn't receive points they had earned, while others may have been given more points than they should have.

We completely changed how points are calculated now, so regardless of how much actvity you do on the site, you now always get the same amount of points for that activity.

As part of the revamp, all incorrect calculations have been corrected for those users who had incorrect scores.

eGifts

A companion feature we also released this week along with the revamped reputation points are eGifts. As you conduct activity throughout PoliceLink you earn a bank of eGift points at the same rate that you earn reputation points. You can use the points to send you friends virtual gifts on PoliceLink - things like a coffee, St. Michael's medalion, and many other thing. When you send a gift the points are deducted from your eGift total, not your reputation points total - so your reputation score will never change.

No More PM'ing All Group Members

Everyone here has experienced the flood of private messages being sent to the various LEO groups. This feature was never intended to be so heavily used and was supposed to be used sparingly. As a result of the over use and numerous complaints, we have removed the feature from group members and have restricted it ONLY to group owners and group moderators.

July 11, 2008 Part 2 - Plagiarism of Training Articles

There has been a recent increase in members submitting training articles to PoliceLink that have originated from other websites or authors.

The purpose of the PoliceLink Training section is for PL members to submit their own training material, or material they have permission to republish. It is not intended as a place to copy and paste plagiarized works from other officers or publications.

When we do catch anyone submitting plagiarized works the submission will be deleted, the points will be deducted from the member's reputation score, plus an additional 100 points will be docked from the member's overall score. Continued violations may result in account sanctioning.

We fully understand the importance of providing training materials in a timely manner to the entire community. If you find training material you feel we must have on PoliceLink but you do not have permission to use, please notify me so we can attempt to source the material through proper channels.

July 25, 2008 - Reputation Points and Major Site Updates

A few users have experienced the loss of points in the "Comments" category of their reputation scores. We are aware of the issue and hope to have a fix as early as today. When the fix is put in place, any "lost" points will automatically be re-awarded.

We have two other great improvements we hope to launch today as well: The new and improved private message system and the ability for recruiters and departments to make free job postings.

More details on both will be made available when the new features are unveiled.
