| Posted over 2 years ago tackleberry72 said: I agree with tackleberry72 here. When working the graveyard shift, the later you can stay up before going to sleep the better. Just make sure you have a good working alarm. The only thing worse than a drowsy driver in the a.m. hours is a drunk driver. In the D.O.C. we try to keep moving by doing extra security checks, regular rounds & chatting with the utility officers from the yard. I worked night shift for 2.5 yrs before going through the academy & becoming a corrections officer so I'm pretty well used to it. Coming into the winter months will teach you to stay awake too! I know you roadies (if I may call you that) have heated cars but, my housing unit has a heating system from the 50s-60s so lwe learn to bundle up. Reading your P&Ps is another good thing to keep you awake & focused. Don't forget... the toes you step on today might be attached to the ass you'll be kissing tomorrow! |

| Posted over 2 years ago Me too soldierswife0508. For the record the smell of cigarette smoke in my H. U. keeps me awake & my 79-130 male inmates on thier toes watching for me to bust them in the act. NO SMOKING on state property. Don't forget... the toes you step on today might be attached to the ass you'll be kissing tomorrow! |

| Posted over 2 years ago We had a really understanding chief and he knew if you were having problems with staying awake he allowed us to park next to each other one doing reports and keeping an eye out and the other sleep for half hour. | Posted over 2 years ago When I worked for a rural county sheriff's Dept they would rather us take a 15-30 min power nap than to crash a cruiser and kill ourselves or someone else. It works great...a busy night going from call to call will definately keep you awake. Now I work for a city PD and they deter any power naps... When I get tired I get out and walk my businesses. |

| Posted over 2 years ago After near 30 years on night shifts, my question is, How do you stay awake on the day shift. Sun comes up, Eyes slam shut. Period. Stay Safe Oh yeah, and Duck nut, I like your Elmer, one of my hero's. 'Tis better to be silent and thought a fool than to open your mouth and remove all doubt.

| Posted over 2 years ago I'm with Tackleberry on this one. I work swing shift and I'm off at 0100 hrs. I stay up until 0430 and wake up at 1230 or so. I have found it's easier to just try to stick to the hours on my days off too. I have guys on my team that go to sleep by 0130 and they're up by like 0900. That's 6 hours of being awake before shift... and they wonder why they are draggin ass by 0100. That's like the average Joe starting his day at 0200... forget that. | Posted over 2 years ago I work the graveyard shift & get off at 7am. I find it hard to sleep when I get home so I stay awake til 1 or 2pm & sleep until 9pm. This keeps me from draggin ass & alert for trouble if & when it happens Don't forget... the toes you step on today might be attached to the ass you'll be kissing tomorrow! |

| Posted over 2 years ago I love coffee but when I am on patrol I do not drink coffee or any other energy drinks. The reason I don't is because they mess with your reflexes. In a sticky situation my adrenaline will already be pumping and fine motor skill start to deminish. If caffeine has me jittery already, it is just compounded. To much caffeine also messes with vision also. I drink water and if I have not had in a while I will stop and get out of the unit and stretch. Stretching help the blood circulate, which will help in keeping you awake. At the time of ingestion, like drinking and eating it does help keep you awake. As soon as you are done, the digestive system kicks in and the other systems in the body slow down which makes you tired. I am not saying not to eat, but just the contrary eat small portions throughout the night. This will keep your metabolism high and not put a strain on the digestive system which will tire you out. |

| Posted over 2 years ago I don't have to do anything to stay up all night because I've had a sleeping disorder since I was born. I can go days on end with no sleep and be as awake and alert and have the energey of someone that just got a full nights rest. Eventually after about 4-5 days sometimes longer I will totaly crash and it's lights out and nothing wakes me up. |

| Posted over 2 years ago MIMI said: I try to stay away from a lot of caffeine. It helps to have a regular workout routine, eat healthy, and try to set aside some quiet tiem for yourself to unwind. But in a crunch, it's Monster lo-carb (the blue M), or a Dunkin Donuts Hazelnut coffee. |

| Posted over 2 years ago I just started pulling 1600 to 0430 shifts. I keep my windows all the way down to keep the air on my face as I cruise and I make a point of getting a big-ass Diet Pepsi for the caffeine. I can't do coffee because it gives me God-awful heartburn. I also go to enough calls that I have to get out and walk around often. If you work a slow shift, just make a point of getting out to walk when you can. |
