Posted over 2 years ago Some all night college study sessions turned me into a night-owl... almost 6am right now... I never drank Red-Bull but I had a bottled water that I would just refill and drink as often as I could think to grab it... Seems like drinking anything helps keep you awake/alert and not to mention frequent bathroom trips or just having to go to the bathroom keeps you awake... sounds silly I know... Also if you sit down at work like I was studying, you can do ab workouts without really paying attention if you sit at the edge of your chair and barely lift your feet off the ground... making muscles work seemed to keep me awake... Heh, and if you're REALLY struggling to keep your eyes open, if you think of how yawns work.. huge intake of oxygen to keep blood flowing faster/keep you awake... try holding your breath for a little bit and when you finally have to breathe, you'll get a bigger rush of oxygen... works about as good as a red bull in my opinion. If I think of any other suggestions I'll let you know, but good luck ;)

Posted over 2 years ago Stay awake?? I wish I knew the trick.but I stay up for days at a time. I have insomnia. It will last sometimes for a week to ten days wih only a 10 to 15 minute nap here and there. I have tried everything even some of the new non- narcotic meds...sonata and ambien, but can not take them because I sleep walk when I take them and do not remeber a thing do. Anyone know of something I can do?

Posted over 2 years ago I'm a dayshifter all the way, but when I do work graves off-duty, I do a mixture of Starbucks before they close, dark chocolate covered espresso beans, then a Monster drink at about 0200 and then 2 Red Bulls at 0430. Makes me get Nystagmus but at least my eyes are open.

Posted over 2 years ago The trick that I've found is to NOT go to bed as soon as you get home from shift, treat a nite shift just like a day shift, try to stay up until 10 or so then go to bed. If I find myself getting sleepy on the road, i get out and walk around, or sometimes, I'll just stop, tell dispatch to call me at the office in 15 minutes and take a short nap. I'd rather explain a nap to the boss than a totaled patrol vehicle

Posted over 2 years ago The craziest thing I ever heard. I overheard someone ask a long haul truck driver how he stayed awake driving at night. He said you take a twenty dollar bill. Hold it in your left hand real tight. Next roll down your window and take the hand holding the twenty and stick it out the window. He said that he has never lost a twenty yet.
