Posted about 1 year ago I am taking the test for the PSP in May. Any advice or words of encouragement? "I walk like this because I CAN BACK IT UP!" "If you're dating a Lambda Alpha Epsilon girl, raise your hand. If you're not, raise your standards!" |

| Posted about 1 year ago Get a good nights sleep, eat a good breakfast, be early, and dress appropriately to include haircut and shave. Even though it's just the written test they will still be evaluationg your appearance. Bookstores have lots of material to prepare for examswith practice tests. GOOD LUCK! thanks....i am a girl, but I'll shave my legs anyway (ha ha ha)....I did get the books. I'm working on them now. What is appropriate attire for the test? I don't want to overdress? Business casual? | Posted about 1 year ago Good luck! I did a lot of thinking and with the training I have been doing, I got a grade 2 stress fracture in my R leg. So I was not able to take the PFT for local. As soon as I get my associates/60credits I plan to apply for PSP cadet program. I live a couple miles from the Avondale station and I found a lot of the information on their website helpful including the PFT requirements, and they even have a preperation guide for the oral:
www.psp.state.pa.us/bhr/lib/bhr/Oral_Exam_Prep_Guide_June_2008.doc.pdf Maybe that will help and Good Luck! |

| Posted about 1 year ago Well, I didn't do as well as I expected to. They watned me to answer as a civilian. I prepared to answer as a law enforcement officer, and apply my training. It really threw me and I was all over the place. I said that I would do SOMETHING for every example they gave. Every situation, I guess that's good...that I wouldn't just stand there and call for help. But my answers were all over the place. I wasn't nervous, just felt more comfortable the other way. I' dont know. Im nervous. So what are the things that will make me do bad? I tried to make contact, didnt fidget, and shook their hands. I'm not sure. Just not as confident anymore :( "I walk like this because I CAN BACK IT UP!" "If you're dating a Lambda Alpha Epsilon girl, raise your hand. If you're not, raise your standards!" |

you may have done better then you think. They don't expect you to know the training manual answer they want to see how your wheels spin and how confident you were. And did you shave your legs? Pain is weakness leaving the body. Obstacles are what we see when we take our eyes off the goal. |

no way! I wanted to look assertive and masculine so I decided to go and i said i was sasquatch ha ha.
But, even though my answers were a bit scattered, do you think I did okay? I was confident, just a little all over the place. I did say that I would intervene in every situation, instead of being an onlooker asking for help. I think thats about all I have going for me. I'm a nervous wreck. I have my PFT in August. Pushups are killing me. I have never had upper arm strength. What type of exercises or equipment should I use to focus mainly on that? Thanks everyone! "I walk like this because I CAN BACK IT UP!" Hopefully my brother and sister LEO's will chime in in which case go with the majority. But I would say you did better then you may think at the risk of getting your hopes up. As I said if you were confident and not answering like you were guessing and your answers weren't just crazy and outlandish but you showed that you would do something then your probably ok. The saying goes something like a bad decision made in time is better then a good decision too late. Pain is weakness leaving the body. Obstacles are what we see when we take our eyes off the goal. |

I said, "I guess I would do...." I was confident, but I could have been a bit more confident. How many people actually fail the oral boards? Is it many? "I walk like this because I CAN BACK IT UP!" | Posted about 1 year ago I'm sure there are many, many officers on the list that will have more experience with strength training than I do, but... If you belong to a gym, work on the machines that focus on your chest, shoulder, and upper arm muscles. The overhead press, seated row, etc. Start off with whatever weight you can comfortably lift for a smooth set of 12. Add more weight as you get stronger - and you WILL get stronger if you keep working those muscles. If you don't belong to a gym, find a fitness book at the library or bookstore and get some cheap weights to use at home. I prefer to buy my books, because some come with pull-out posters you can stick on the wall so that you don't forget the routine, etc. If you can't afford a set of weights, some books even list alternatives that you may have around the house such as 1# cans, gallon milk jugs (the weight differs depending on how full they are), etc. Good luck!!! |

Errm, that is what that PDF file I posted said. They said reply as a civilian not a LEO. Anyways, if you gave it your absolute 110% best, you should have done fine, Sure it's nervewrecking because of people staring right at. It was when I had my honor role interview but that is COMPLETELY different :p... Were people dressed well? Were other peoples hair brushed/combed neatly?
Here, look at this: FROM www.psp.state.pa.us
ENTRY LEVEL STANDARDS
300 METER RUN 67 SECONDS SIT-UPS 30 REPETITIONS IN ONE MINUTE PUSH-UPS 13 REPETITIONS VERTICAL JUMP 14 INCHES 1.5 MILE RUN 16:54 GRADUATION STANDARDS
300 METER RUN 56 SECONDS SIT-UPS 37 REPETITIONS IN ONE MINUTE PUSH-UPS 30 REPETITIONS VERTICAL JUMP 18 INCHES 1.5 MILE RUN 14:05
These are the standards you need to complete in order for entry and graduation. But you can gaurantee it is not only just 13 or 30 pushups throughout the academy. I bought a book about 2 weeks ago, "The S.W.A.T. Workout, and I was reading that for a certain amount of pushups that you want to do, you need to double that amount everyday. Example, if you want to do 50 pushups, do 100 each day for a week BUT break the task up throughout the day and not all at once. so do a total of X pushups each hour during the day to = 100.
As shellgame stated, doing fitness work on your upperbody will help. But note that the weight and how many reps are variable. If you use more weight, less reps. Less weight but more reps. I don't have my log on me now, but it states the reason why more=less and less=more. Anyways, keep working! especially with the pushups and doing the proper form!
Good Luck! |

| Posted about 1 year ago Yes I looked at the PSP stuff. I was also training from all of my LEO test books from clfifs and other popular publishers. It's okay, nothing I can do now. Their hair was quite sloppy! Especailly the girls. Bad dye jobs and looked windblown. Guys were okay. Everyone was dressed in business attire. Some didn't have jackets, but they looked nice. I just dont want to be the "repeat". "I walk like this because I CAN BACK IT UP!" "If you're dating a Lambda Alpha Epsilon girl, raise your hand. If you're not, raise your standards!" |

The number or troopers that they can hire has to be approved by state legislature. Compliment under Gov Rendell's present approved budget won't be met till the end of 2009. I believe that the list is only as good for as long as it takes them to fill the open positions due to retirement and the approved new hires |

Good Job! You will probably hear something soon they have been putting about 120-140 in classes lately. My advice is to start working out if you haven't. A lot a people fail out on the PT or polygraph (Don't hide anything, sure way to fail). They will also have a PT test on the day you report and if you fail they will not admit you. One last word of advice find the biggest hill and run up and down it. The first 4 weeks they will run you up and down the hills till you puke; just to try to wash you out. They want people who really want to be there. Good Luck ! Hope you like the smell of Chocolate. Lex et Ordines |

| Posted about 1 year ago I got a call back. I go for my PFT December 15 and 16th. Any suggestions? How strict are they on the pushups for girls? I know I have to hit the block of wood or fist, whichever they use. Just asking because I just recently have started being able to them and I can't get too low.
