In my previous agency, I was issued a .357 and later a 9mm for a duty weapon.  No option to carry a firearm of my choosing as the primary firearm.  With my current agency, I am allowed to carry my firearm of choice - a Glock 21.  Seems this policy is more prevalent in the West.  What say you?

In Joliet, we have to carry Department owned issued weapons, which are the Glock 17 (9mm), Remington 870 shotguns, and just recently, Armalite AR-15a3's.  Off-duty and back-ups can be anything with a drop safety that is .380 or better.

The reasoning for this is the ease of maintaining (Glock armorers), same ammo (and magazines, holsters, etc.) for all, and the convienience of having it put into evidence (if used in shooting) for statute of limitations on legal matters.  Losing your own gun for years would not be fun.

The same goes for the rifles, in which any modification (i.e. slings, scopes, rail systems), must be approved by a Department armorer.

I personally do not like the Glock or the 9mm caliber.

We are issued Glock 21's, but we can carry any .45ACP as long it is a quality weapon.  We are also issued Remington 870's and can carry AR-15's if we purchase them ourselves.

We are issued Glock 22's but can carry SIG, Smith & Wesson, or Beretta as long as they are .40 and armorer approved and qualified on. Off-Duty we can carry whatever we want as long as we qual on it.

When I was in San Diego the issue weapon was a S&W Model 10 with a 6" BBL but you were allowed to carry a different weapon. I chose my Mdl 28 Highway Patrolman .357 mag with a 4" BBL. We were required to use .38 ammo. In South Carolina we were issued S&W Mdl 10's with a 4" bull BBL and a 158gr round nose .38. The sidearm later changed to the Mdl 64 which was the same thing in stainless steel. Just before being retired they allowed us to use a 158gr lead +p hollow point. No other weapons or rounds were allowed. The ammo was really pitiful and would not penetrate even a windshield. They now carry .40 cal Glocks but I don't know what Mdl or what ammo. I do know it is all standardized.

We are issued and have to carry the Glock 22.  We are also allowed to carry other weapons along as we qualify with them.

Duty weapon must be department issued. Currently it is the Glock 31, .357 sig. Also are issued a Glock 33, an 870 and an AR15. Off-duty weapon may be a personal gun, but we has to be department approved.

Like I said in the other threads like this one, I have to carry at least one of my issued weapons off duty. Now if I want to I could strap on however many personal weapons as I want to.

On-duty only the agency issued Sig Sauer .45 cal. off-duty you can carry POF (personally Owned Firearm) as long as it is .380 cal. or larger, has been approved by the Chief (must submit memo describing weapon and requesting permission to carry), and you must qualify with both weapons twice a year.

We can carry anything we want as long as we've qualified with it.  I it has to be a 9mm, .40, .357, or .45.. thank god because I hate glocks... I carry a USP 45 or Kimber on Duty  a  H&K  P2000  off.   They just made it mandatory to carry issued ammo... now I've got some junk ass Winchester White box hollow points... I was using Hornady TAP (RED BOX)... Oh well... I carry my personal Ar-15 on duty.   Personally I like being able to choose what might save my live... i dont think I could work some place where stick me with some issued junk because the last guy never took care of it and now I have to trust my life on it....

We are issued a Glock 21, .45ACP.

We are allowed to purchase and use whatever we like, as long it has more than 8 rounds in the mag and must be larger than 9mm for on-duty use.

Off-duty we are allowed whatever we like.
