I have been a security officer for about 2 years now and I have just recently been certified to hold a taser…At the location that I work at many of the people have said for a security guard to be holding a taser is too much…I was just woundering if you saw a security officer with a taser would it be okay?

I've seen security guards that are allowed to carry guns.....so what is the big deal with carrying a taser? If you are allowed to carry pepper spray, OC, or a baton...then a taser should be OK too. The problem you have is with people's misconceptions about the taser, but you can't do anything about their ignorance. JMO

In our work...bad things can happen at anytime to anyone wearing a badge. (Security Officers included) ALL should welcome any tools provided to bring in the bad guys safely and without officer injury. WEAR I T WITH PRIDE brother.

It is what it is.............and.........these things too shall pass.

Exactly. We can carry a gun, and use it if we have to, but let us deploy a taser and people will go nuts. Especially the campus hippies that some of us have to deal with. Misconceptions are there because people choose to be ignorant on a subject and follow the 'crowd' on opinions. Being 'able to carry' and 'should we carry' are different things. Yes, every member of my campus security department could handle carrying a taser with the proper training, blah blah blah. But the contract company in the next town over (that I worked for many years ago) has the habit of hiring idiots, and from what I've seen and heard nothing has changed. Give them tasers and something dumb will happen. I think that if an individual officer is seen fit to carry, then it would be good. Maybe in AZ it wouldn't cause a big deal, but in my area people would go nuts. Maybe I should move.

It's great to have, I've rarely had to use mine. Corrections and Security, and armed with an x26 at both, only had a few incidents at the jail that I've decided to use my taser for instead of other means to subdue a threat. Remember that the legal recourse brought on by blood sucking lawyers becomes quite the hassle.

Also, be wary of any coworkers that tend to be a little badge heavy [this happens in security just as in law enforcement, unfourtunately. They want to pretend to be cops, to stroke their tiny ego]. They can get your whole staff into hot water with one stupid misuse of the taser, believe me!

I second this....

Congrats on getting certified for the tazer though! Are you able to carry it now?

Well as long as you are just holding it I don't think you are going to hurt yourself. Do you have to buy your own batteries?

I agree and disagree. Security guards tend to be hit or miss. Good guy just trying to make it, or complete moron who wants to be a cop, but isn't good enough.

The good guards understand the taser isn't a toy, and not something to randomly threaten teenagers with, when they don't comply when you give them a direction [As much as I'd love to taser those losers, it just doesn't work that way]. Then there are the idiots, and there are LOTS of them. When I was in high school, I did mall security. I once saw a guard in his upper 20's threaten a 12 year old with handcuffs and OC spray because the kid was sitting on a railing.

Issuing the taser to good guards generally means issuing it to the bad guards as well, unfourtunately [And sometimes it can be hard to tell the difference from a higher up's stand point, who isn't always observing them.]
One bad guard is all it takes to destroy the rest of your department.

At a prior place of employment, [private university to remain nameless] they took away Security carrying {dept approved personally owned} Firearms and replaced them with Tasers....That (among other reasons) caused me to resign.... If it was Only Tasers to start, ok... or if they ADDED Tasers, again ok... but Less Lethal Force should NEVER be considered a replacement for a deadly force option....

I think if your trained then so be it there are many times when a cap stun is just not practicle. I run a security company in New york and we can Carry guns, but not tazer's wich are less- lethal.. Home land security and New york state are trying to change this. So to answer your question I don't have a problem with security officers carrying tazer's i think its a good idea!

Given some of the idiots I work with? I barely trust them with a clipboard and a pen; hell no. (Insert random disclaimer that, just because I work with idiots, it doesn't mean you do. It just means yours are better at hiding. Or professional.)

Personally think it's another thing to get tangled up on the utility belt and probably won't work when need most. There are several deaths attributed to being over-tased . In the old days security and officers were able to apprehend and subdue a subject by themselves, without several piling on top of situation and creating mass confusion,  while they are yelling stuff that the bad guy cannot comphrehend or understand what they want. How can they comply if they can't understand?  If you are close enough for a taser, which could miss the target anyway, why not just use the asp, pepper spray or spin, pin and cuff him?  Need to have a system if they are going to use these things where the operater yells commands...TASING 1, TASING 2, TASING 3, STOPPING!... or something so that they are not over-tased to death, especially in chase scenereos where the excitability can cause the heart to stop, just as a defibulator was used on it. Have heard incidents where deaf people were tased because of non-compliance when they were trying to read the lips of the person screaming orders at them. If they are wet or covered in sweat, it is probably no different than standing in a puddle of water and sticking your fingers into an electric box. They are only 1 or 2 shots, so what about multiple assailants? A 3 cell Maglite or asp is just as fast to deploy for defense, backing up and using pepper spray, unless you're trained to advance through the assailant until threat is terminated?Sometimes they just piss the bad guy off if they are on drugs and they rip the barbs out, thoroughly re-energized and ready to whip on somebody....then if you can't wrestle the beast down you have a real problem.

I heard there was a stun-ball gun they were working on that fired multiple shots, up to 10-15 and used a steel bearing, powered by co2 like a paintball gun. The ball has barbs that pop out upon impact and stick  in, departing 60,000 volts, just like a stun gun, but I would bet that about 3 of these would drop someone pretty quick and have the accuracy of further away shots. Pretty close to service pistol size. Stun guns are another thing..you have to be at arms length to use them and no guarantee that the battery will work at that moment. Then, there is the liability of the situation; suppose the bad guy does die or sue your company and then also a civil suit on yourself...bond insurance for companies are manditory, but individually you could be sued pretty bad as well.  Personally I will wait until they have the multiple shooter gun so,  by then you can probably use pepper ball or stun balls with magazines like a regular handgun; tasers are too bulky in size and cost almost as much as a real gun for anything more reliable at present time.

Dude...wtf? Just stop...unless you're speaking from experience like "I used the X26 and it's crap" then come on!

As for the "batteries can fail" theory...well, OC is a compressed, liquid agent that can fail if punctured or kept in too hot or too cold weather so you shouldn't carry that....battons can break bones, so you shouldn't carry that....guns can blow up so you should carry that....oh, and radio batteries can die too, so you shouldn't carry radios either.

Get my drift? Your arguement is flawed...the more tools you have to complete the job, the better...now, if people aren't properly trained in their use, then we may have a problem. The average person barely knows how to handle a computer and their own motor-vehicle (I know because I drive to work). We would all like to believe that we are "above average." The arguement of this thread isn't how expensive or usefull a taser will be to an SEO, it's how an SEO will conduct him/herself with that equipment that is a concern of ours. Your average SEO can barely manage a flashlight and radio...I know, I've worked with these types.

Your above statement just leads me to believe that you're one of "those types" that need to be checked on every hour to make sure you haven't taken apart your radio to "fix it" (if you know what I mean). Take this for what it's worth...I'm just saying you should stick with making a statement with what you know to be true and can back up with facts and intelligent statements...otherwise you're just going to add fuel to the other side of the coin that thinks all SEOs are tards.
