I am just curious! We all know that while dispatching there are times when it is absolutely slow. I know I just used the "S" word. Hope I don't jinx anyone! But anyway - what does everyone do to keep themselves busy? What are you allowed to do at work?

I know what you are asking. When I dispatched I was just bored and nothing to do. Patrol when i was bored I found something to do. CID detectives, always a new case coming in and was never bored.. Now narcotics supervisor, well, I miss being bored.

My department allows us to pretty much do what we want. We have TV, and internet. We also read books, magazines and stuff like that. As long as the material is not improper we are able to read it/view it.

Got a buddy in Victoria Texas. When the night would slow down they had a challenge to see who could get the furthers out of town and back without getting a call. They had to have proof of their distance and would most of the time take a picture. Well on night, my buddy made it as far as Cuero Texas. That is approximately 30 miles away from Victoria. He snapped a picture of his unit in front of the "Welcome to Cuero" sign and returned to Victoria. When he was coming back in, he and his partner both received an emergency call. Lucked out!

When I know I am going to be waiting someplace, I do what little old ladies everywhere do-- knit! I also take along a book of sudoku.

Free Time? There are dispatch centers that have free time? LOL...just kidding....we get one or two of them a year..usually Thanskgiving and Christmas....Work swing shift - 12pm to 2200 in Las Vegas, NV....seems these are the only 2 days this town actually stops.....

We get to read, limited internet, limited TV - news only.....mostly we get to relax and have fun and chat with each other...

The phrase "proactive policing" comes to mind. You can always find something to get into. Be creative

we only get to watch the news or weather channel, we don't have the internet. We can read and I crochet. Now that the little darlins are back in school the nites have calmed down. I'm responsible enough to be in charge of a radio but I can't be distracted by anything else. Sigh. Funny how I'm responsible in some areas then can't be "trusted" to do my job and believe you me--my guys come first above EVERYTHING~~in my relationship with other dispatchers. If I hurt someone ones feelings, trying to get information, I'm sorry but my guys come first. Get over it.

getting real bored I just walk out the back yard of the house and shoot at the trees.

On patrol I get bored I go out to the country away from houses and try out the new toys I bought.
